Google delays the launch of its ChatGPT rival: Gemini AI

The tech giant has pushed back the launch of its new conversational AI model, Gemini AI, amid speculation over if it can out-perform competitor models

Google’s latest AI product, Gemini AI, has now been delayed until at least January 2024.

First announced as in-training in May 2023, Gemini AI is expected to be one of the most powerful AI products ever built. According to Google, it will have sophisticated multi-modal capabilities, be able to master human-style conversations, language and content, as well as understand and interpret images, code, drive data and analytics and be used by developers to create new AI apps and APIs.

Originally planning to launch Gemini AI before the end of 2023, The Information suggests that the reason for delay could be due to the tool struggling with non-English prompts and queries.

Designed to enhance existing Google AI products

The purpose of Gemini is to handle a broad range of applications which combine different types of data like images and text for more advanced tasks. In May 2023, Google said: “Once fine-tuned and rigorously tested for safety, Gemini will be available at various sizes and capabilities.”

Gemini is also expected to bring improvements to Google’s existing AI and AI-enhanced products too, like Bard, Google Assistant and Search. The organisation has suggested that Gemini is designed to be a powerful, versatile and context-aware AI capable of understanding and interacting with the world in new ways.

In the future, Gemini could even power most of Google’s products and services.

Developments such as these come under the umbrella of enterprises seeking to create a more human-led AI. In particular, generative AI use has exploded in part because it demonstrates a machine that can imitate human activity, stemming from speaking with one another and writing reports for example.

With this in mind, it is easy to see that through Gemini AI, Google wishes to create a multi-modal AI with multi-tasking capabilities.

It has also been suggested that Gemini will strongly outperform competitors, including OpenAI's GPT-4 as it harnesses vastly more computing power. With OpenAI having dominated the 2023 AI news space, it appears as though Google is taking the time to perfect the AI model and ensure it performs as best it can.

At the time, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated: “Gemini was created from the ground up to be multimodal, highly efficient at tool and API integrations and built to enable future innovations, like memory and planning. While still early, we’re already seeing impressive multimodal capabilities not seen in prior models.”

He said: “Once fine-tuned and rigorously tested for safety, Gemini will be available at various sizes and capabilities, just like PaLM 2.”

It remains to be seen if Gemini could be a solution to enhance enterprise use of AI, machine learning and data analytics. However, in the midst of a continually growing market, and if other competitor models are anything to go by, it could shape up to be a very interesting 2024 - with Google leading the charge.
