Google is set to invest US$9bn in South Carolina through 2027 to expand its data centre footprint, a major commitment to advancing the US’ AI and digital infrastructure.

The initiative could strengthen the state’s position as a vital hub for the technology and energy sectors.

This investment will facilitate the expansion of Google’s existing Berkeley County data centre campus and support the construction of two new facilities in Dorchester County.

The sites are intended to boost Google’s capacity to deliver AI-powered services and cloud computing platforms, addressing the rising demand for computational power while focusing on infrastructure resilience.

Powering AI and cloud operations

Google’s investment is a strategic move to reinforce the infrastructure supporting its AI and cloud operations across the eastern US.

The new and expanded data centres will house the high-density compute environments required to train and deploy advanced AI models and manage growing enterprise workloads.

“I am pleased to share that Google is investing US$9bn in South Carolina to expand our data centre infrastructure in the state, deliver programmes to protect energy affordability and train the local workforce for careers in the state’s growing tech and energy sector,” says Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at Alphabet and Google.

The development emphasises South Carolina’s long-term role in Google’s US data strategy.

Since establishing its first data centre in the state in 2007, Google has focused on energy efficiency, community partnerships and digital transformation projects.

Fostering a skilled workforce

A large part of the investment is dedicated to workforce training and energy affordability.

Through a new Google.org grant to the Electrical Training Alliance (etA), the company will help integrate AI tools into the alliance’s curriculum.

This programme aims to train over 160 apprentices for careers in South Carolina’s expanding technology and energy industries.

By working with regional training organisations and community partners, Google intends to create pathways into high-skill careers that support the broader AI and data infrastructure ecosystem.

“This investment helps support job growth in South Carolina as it benefits from the upside of AI. Google is proud to build on our 15 years of work in the Palmetto State to help secure its success during the next wave of American innovation,” Ruth explains.

The expansion is also expected to create several construction and operational jobs, reinforcing Google’s commitment to the state where it already supports thousands of indirect jobs through its services, renewable energy projects and small business programmes.

Building sustainable AI infrastructure

Sustainability is a core principle of Google’s global data centre operations. The company has maintained carbon neutrality since 2007 and has a goal to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

The new facilities in South Carolina are expected to align with this goal by incorporating renewable power sources and advanced cooling systems to minimise water consumption.

The state’s expanding renewable energy portfolio offers a solid foundation for this expansion.

Furthermore, South Carolina’s infrastructure and connectivity make it a strategic location for Google’s wider US data network, which includes investments in global operations in markets like Belgium and the UK.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, Google’s expansion will be crucial in supporting its AI ambitions.

The new data centres will provide the power needed to develop generative AI models, improve cloud capabilities for enterprise clients and ensure secure high-performance computing for new digital services.

This investment signals Google’s confidence in the state’s capacity to support its AI and cloud ecosystem for the future.
