BT unveils a digital sovereignty platform to support AI, cloud and data services for UK enterprises and public sector organisations

BT has launched a new sovereign platform designed to enable secure deployment of AI and cloud workloads within UK-managed infrastructure.

The development extends its digital sovereignty strategy and provides enterprises and public sector organisations with a framework for maintaining operational control and data compliance under domestic governance.

The platform is built to ensure that sensitive systems, workloads and datasets are managed within a UK infrastructure environment, supported exclusively by UK-based staff where required.

BT says the platform will help enterprises meet sovereignty requirements while maintaining access to global technologies.

Jon James, CEO of BT Business

Jon James, CEO of BT Business, says: “Sovereignty isn’t simply a matter of compliance or risk management – it’s key to unleashing the potential of AI and ensuring resilient operations in an increasingly uncertain world.

Our pioneering launch reflects BT’s unique position as the digital backbone of the UK and the only provider with the scale, capabilities and experience to enable true UK sovereign solutions.”

Expanding BT’s sovereign services to support AI

The new platform builds on BT’s core network capabilities and its experience supporting critical infrastructure operations.

It is positioned to enable UK-aligned service delivery for AI, data processing and cloud workloads that require governance over data residency and operations.

Through the sovereign platform, BT will make a range of new services available in voice, cloud and AI over the coming months.

Organisations are increasingly looking for sovereignty in their services and it’s up to us to make sure we deliver for our customers.

That means making sure we’re offering the right sovereign solutions that ensure data and operations remain secure, compliant, resilient and future-proofed.

From 2026, BT Business will also introduce sovereign versions of its existing core products, allowing customers to define sovereignty levels based on compliance, security or performance requirements.

Integrating digital infrastructure with AI governance

BT’s investment aligns with growing industry demand for sovereign frameworks capable of supporting AI innovation while preserving regulatory control and data integrity.

Its platform provides infrastructure for model deployment, data exchange and AI application delivery under controlled access conditions.

The approach reflects wider moves across the AI ecosystem to ensure that the compute, data and orchestration layers underpinning generative and enterprise AI workloads remain compliant with local regulations.

BT’s UK-managed infrastructure supports it through trusted networking and data centre capabilities tailored to national requirements.

The sovereign platform also positions BT to work with technology partners building AI models that rely on verifiable data protection and transparency.

The platform’s architecture aims to provide a foundation for secure training, inference and lifecycle management within domestic data boundaries.

BT aligns with UK Government AI sovereignty plan

The launch coincides with the UK Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, which emphasises investment in national AI capacity, data centres and sovereign compute resources. BT’s role as a founding member of the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum supports the national direction.

BT further participates in the AI skills development programme, designed to expand workforce capabilities in AI engineering and data governance. BT’s contributions focus on infrastructure readiness and digital ecosystems to support policy objectives around national AI sovereignty.

By integrating its network and cloud assets with sovereign frameworks, BT positions itself to play a foundational role in enabling AI systems that operate securely, transparently and in compliance with UK regulatory requirements.
