It was announced that Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have introduced Chris Meserole as the first Executive Director of the Frontier Model Forum, and the creation of a new US$10m plus initiative, known as AI Safety Fund, to promote research in the field of AI safety.
The Frontier Model Forum is an industry body focused on ensuring the safe and responsible development of frontier AI models. It is releasing its first technical working group update on red teaming, a practice where ethical hackers are authorised by an organisation to simulate real-world attacks against the organisation's systems. This update aims to share industry expertise with a wider audience as the Forum expands its work on responsible AI governance approaches.
A new role in this AI-developing world
Bringing a wealth of experience in technology policy, Chris Meserole joins the Frontier Model Forum with a strong background in governance and safety concerning emerging technologies and their future applications. His most recent position was as the Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Initiative at the Brookings Institution.
In his new role, Meserole takes on the responsibility of helping the Forum in accomplishing its core objectives, which focus on advancing research in AI safety to foster the responsible development of cutting-edge models and mitigate potential risks; identifying best safety practices for frontier models; sharing knowledge to policymakers, academics, civil society, and other stakeholders to drive responsible AI development; and supporting initiatives that harness AI to tackle society's most significant challenges.
As reported by Google, Meserole says: "The most powerful AI models hold enormous promise for society, but to realise their potential we need to better understand how to safely develop and evaluate them. I’m excited to take on that challenge with the Frontier Model Forum."
Collaboration concerning AI safety
In response to the rapid advancements in AI capabilities, the Forum and philanthropic partners are establishing a new AI Safety Fund, which totals over US$10m. The Fund is a crucial step in fulfilling commitments made by Forum members to support third-party vulnerability discovery in AI systems and aims to promote a broader and more diverse global conversation on AI safety and knowledge sharing.
In recent months, the Forum has collaborated to establish a shared framework of definitions for terms, concepts, and procedures. This effort ensures a foundational understanding from which researchers, governments, and fellow industry professionals can initiate discussions concerning AI safety and governance matters.
An expert on AI safety, international governance, and global cooperation
In his own professional work, Meserole has dedicated his efforts to safeguarding large-scale AI systems against the risks of unintended or malicious use. His contributions include co-leading the world's first global multi-stakeholder group on recommendation algorithms and violent extremism for the Global Internet Forum on Counter-Terrorism.
Meserole has also authored publications and provided testimony on the challenges arising from AI-enabled surveillance and repression, as well as organised a bilateral dialogue between the United States and China on AI and national security, emphasising AI safety, testing, and evaluation.
Meserole's academic background includes interpretable machine learning and computational social science. He has regularly offered counsel to influential figures in government, industry, and civil society, with his research featured in prominent publications such as the New Yorker, New York Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Wired, and other publications.
As reported by the Frontier Forum Model, Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Google & Alphabet expressed: “We’re excited to work together with other leading companies, sharing technical expertise to promote responsible AI innovation. We’re all going to need to work together to make sure AI benefits everyone.”
