4: DeepSeek

DeepSeek has quickly emerged as a significant player in the global AI landscape

DeepSeek is a Chinese AI startup founded in Hangzhou by hedge fund manager Liang Wenfeng in 2024. The company has quickly emerged as a significant player in the global AI landscape, particularly with its R1 model that reportedly matches or exceeds the capabilities of established AI systems while claiming to be developed at a fraction of the cost.

The company gained prominence in early 2025 when its mobile application, powered by its V3 model, reached the top position in Apple’s US App Store.

DeepSeek's emergence has had significant market impact, causing fluctuations in Nvidia's stock price and raising questions about the enormous investments made by US companies in AI development. The company has been described by venture capitalist Marc Andreessen as representing "AI's Sputnik moment," particularly due to its ability to achieve sophisticated reasoning capabilities without relying on massive supervised datasets.

3: Gemini

Google announced Gemini 2.0 in December 2024, the latest model in its line of LLMs

Launched in December 2024, Google’s latest Gemini 2.0 model has introduced several models: Flash, a model optimised for everyday tasks; Pro, focused on coding and complex prompts; and Flash-Lite, designed for cost-effective AI applications.

The platform integrates seamlessly with Google’s ecosystem, offering features like Deep Research for advanced reasoning and long-context analysis. While the base version is free, Gemini Advanced provides access to more sophisticated models for complex tasks like coding and research analysis.

Google has positioned Gemini 2.0 as a step toward a ā€˜universal assistant,’ offering multimodal capabilities across text, video, images and code.

2: Claude

First introduced in March 2023, Claude has evolved through multiple iterations

Claude is a family of large language models developed by Anthropic. First introduced in March 2023, Claude has evolved through multiple iterations, with the Claude 3 family launching in March 2024. The Claude 3 lineup consists of three specialised models: Haiku, which prioritises speed for everyday tasks; Sonnet, which balances capabilities and performance; and Opus, which excels at complex reasoning tasks.

Built on GPT architecture, Claude models are trained to predict next words in text and are fine-tuned using constitutional AI and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). The Claude 3 family has expanded its capabilities to include both text and image processing, with Claude 3 Opus showing particular strength in areas like mathematics, programming, and logical reasoning.

Claude is available through a subscription model, with a Pro plan priced at US$20 monthly.
