LEAP 2025: Saudi Arabia's Tech and AI Revolution
Saudi Arabia is swiftly transforming into a global hub for innovation and technology, aligning with its Saudi Vision 2030.
The LEAP conference, held at the Riyadh International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Malham, plays a pivotal role in this shift.
Since its launch in 2022, the event has been instrumental in facilitating over $42.4bn in technology-related investments, positioning the Kingdom as a pioneer in digital transformation.
Initiated with a keynote from His Excellency Eng Abdullah Alswaha, the Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology, LEAP 2025 marks a significant milestone. He states: “LEAP 2025 is a defining moment because when the Kingdom works, the region works and the whole world works.
“LEAP has evolved from a movement to a multiplier effect – but now is our defining moment. Technology has catalysed Saudi Arabia as the biggest success story in youth and female empowerment in the 21st Century, and we are laser-focused on continuing that success story. The intelligence age is here and, in partnership with you, we are going to take that leap together.”
Investment surges significantly
Significant investments continue to arrive, with LEAP 2025 attracting $14.9bn in new AI funding.
These new investments span several critical areas including AI, cloud computing and digital infrastructure, showcasing the Kingdom's commitment to diversifying its economy beyond its traditional oil base.
AI and Cloud Computing:
- Groq and Aramco Digital launched a US$1.5bn initiative to boost AI-powered inference infrastructure and cloud services.
- Lenovo and ALAR have announced a US$2bn investment to establish a state-of-the-art technology and manufacturing centre focused on robotics and AI.
- Google has introduced new AI-driven infrastructure and a computing cluster aimed at addressing regional and global needs.
- Qualcomm has made its ALLAM language model available on the Qualcomm AI Cloud.
- SambaNova has committed US$140m to develop sophisticated AI infrastructure.
Data Centres and Digital Infrastructure:
- KKR partnered with Gulf Data Hub to fund the expansion of data centres, aiming to reach an overall capacity of up to 300 megawatts.
Manufacturing and Robotics:
- Lenovo and ALAT are investing an additional $2bn to integrate AI into manufacturing, improving industrial efficiency and automation.
These investments will not only enhance the technological landscape in Saudi Arabia but also support job creation and the development of a knowledge-based economy.
Michael Champion, CEO of Tahaluf, highlights the significant impact of these investments: “The massive volume of new investments announced on day one builds on the progress made at LEAP and across the Kingdom in previous years, reaffirming Saudi Arabia’s undisputed status as the primary digital accelerator in the Middle East and North Africa.”
Quantum computing
Quantum computing, projected to dramatically influence various sectors including pharmaceuticals and energy, emerges as a significant theme at LEAP 2025.
Arvind Krishna, Chairman & CEO of IBM, predicts significant quantum computing breakthroughs in 'three to five years', emphasising the technology's potential to solve complex problems swiftly, thus driving efficiency and innovation in critical areas.
He explains: “A breakthrough I think is only about three-to-five years in the future is quantum computing – I think we will see something amazing.”
Krishna continues: “We’re very excited to already be working on it with some partners in the Kingdom, but I believe quantum computing will open up areas that, for the Kingdom, will be very exciting. It will all be about materials, energy, oil and gas, possibly pharmaceuticals – all areas that are critical to the Kingdom and very much part of Vision 2030.”
- Engine VR’s Golden Gloves VR
- Adobe’s Project Primrose
- Databricks’ US$300m in integrated PaaS solutions
