Pirelli has signed an agreement with Swedish 3D computer vision and machine learning company Univrses to bring AI‑based computer vision into its Cyber Tyre platform.

Pirelli says the collaboration strengthens solutions for road monitoring and supports autonomous driving.

Cyber Tyre is a hardware and software system which collects data from sensors inside tyres. It processes data using Pirelli’s proprietary algorithms and communicates insights in real time to vehicle electronics.

By integrating Univrses’ 3DAI platform, the system will combine in‑tyre telemetry with camera‑based road intelligence. This fusion can deliver richer, actionable data to vehicles and road operators.

Andrea Casaluci, CEO at Pirelli, says: “The agreement with Univrses further enhances our Cyber Tyre platform, thanks to advanced AI‑based artificial vision technologies.

“The collaboration between Pirelli and Univrses will make a significant contribution to the ongoing transformation of cars into true software‑defined vehicles.”

Under the agreement, Pirelli is set to acquire a 30% stake in Univrses. It will also have an option to reach a majority stake.

Manufacturing in Georgia

Pirelli confirms it will start production of Cyber Tyre at its plant in Rome and Georgia, US. The site manufactures advanced tyre products for the high‑value segment and motorsport.

The company is finalising deployment of its Modular Integrated Robotised System production process at the facility. Pirelli says this will be the group’s most advanced process for high‑end, premium output.

Production in Georgia brings Cyber Tyre closer to North American customers. It also strengthens Pirelli’s industrial footprint and innovation capabilities in the US.

Claudio Zanardo, CEO of Pirelli North America, notes: “The start of Cyber Tyre production in our Rome, Georgia plant is a significant milestone for Pirelli in this country.

“It reflects our commitment to bringing advanced technologies like Cyber Tyre closer to the market, further strengthening our industrial footprint and innovation capabilities in the US.”

US governance and expansion

Pirelli says that specific investment and output expansion details for Georgia will follow in the coming months. These will be communicated after finalisation of development plans.

Reuters reports that a governance dispute linked to concerns over US rules restricting Chinese technology in the automotive sector emerged before the decision to manufacture in the US. The dispute related to Pirelli’s Chinese investor Sinochem.

There are also reports that Italy moved to curb Sinochem’s influence to support Pirelli’s expansion in the US. Sinochem holds a 34.1% stake in Pirelli.

Pirelli maintains that US production will underpin growth for Cyber Tyre. It will also support deployment with automakers and fleets.

First project in Italy

Pirelli announced that the first joint project with Univrses is underway in Italy. In 2025, Pirelli and the Puglia Region launched a monitoring system for the regional road network.

The system creates an up‑to‑date map of infrastructure conditions. It provides analyses based on data collected by tyres and processed through the Cyber Tyre platform.

Visual data is collected through cameras and interpreted using Univrses’ 3DAI technology. The combined approach enables continuous, scalable assessments of road assets.

Pirelli says this project demonstrates how tyre‑borne sensing and computer vision can support road authorities. It also illustrates potential benefits for autonomous driving features.

Univrses’ track record

Univrses has worked with leading vehicle manufacturers over the past seven years to develop advanced driver assistance functionality. Its software is integrated into flagship models from several global brands.

The company has previously collaborated with Volvo Group and Mercedes‑Benz. It also supports authorities across Europe with road intelligence at scale.

Clients include Sweden’s Trafikverket and National Highways in the UK. Their use cases range from pavement condition to roadside asset inventory.

Jonathan Selbie, CEO of Univrses, says: “Continuous monitoring and data are becoming the new foundation for infrastructure asset management and Univrses technology is able to provide powerful analytical capabilities based on reliable and frequently updated data.

“In this context, we are pleased to welcome Pirelli as an investor and to take our partnership to the next level: we will join forces to deliver increasingly advanced services and products.”
