Disney invests US$1bn in OpenAI, licensing more than 200 characters for AI-generated content, while gaining equity, creative tools and new fan engagement

From being tangled in lawsuits to now being stronger together, AI giants and creative studios are turning a mystical chapter of collaboration.

Singing to this tune is the recent agreement between the Walt Disney Company and OpenAI, which will make Disney the first major content licensing partner for Sora, OpenAI’s popular, short-form Gen AI video platform. 

This three year licensing agreement opens the gate of the magical Kingdom for Sora users, giving them access to more than 200 beloved characters from the Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars universe. 

This agreement will provide Sora users with the creative power to generate fan-inspired video content using not just the characters, but costumes, props, vehicles and iconic environments from the company.

This means that the Disney-OpenAI deal is a step in future-proofing creativity and digital storytelling

Even before this new agreement, Disney has kept the space for an AI painting brush, having recently released a VP-level role to ensure human-AI collaboration

With a US$1bn investment in Open AI, Disney will enjoy the benefits of using the company’s APIs to build new products, tools and experiences for Disney fans.

This would also allow Disney to roll out ChatGPT for assisting its employees.

By actively shaping the AI use of licensed content and strategically investing in Open AI, the company is taking an active step in integrating AI responsibly into its entertainment ecosystem, that is at the cusp of AI transformation.

The new agreement hands Sora users the magic AI wand to create its own inspiring stories with their favourite Disney characters and share them with the world. 

A selection of these Sora generated videos can also be streamed on Disney+, giving creatives and fans a place to showcase the products of their imagination.

The fan-inspired video content licensed by Disney will be available on chatGPT and Sora early in 2026.
