Meet Mastercard's Virtual CFO, a C-Suite AI Agent for SMEs

Mastercard is positioning itself at the forefront of AI-driven business management with the launch of its Virtual C-Suite for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), an evolution of its Agentic Suite designed to empower executives behind the scenes.
Building on decades of expertise in payments, data, security and leadership, the new Virtual C-Suite demonstrates Mastercard’s growing ambition to become a leading authority in AI applications for the commerce ecosystem.
Recent initiatives, such as facilitating agentic payments with Santander, speak to this pivot in strategy.
The Virtual C-Suite reflects Mastercard’s holistic approach to “full commerce lifecycle” management, extending from understanding money flows to predicting risk and recommending actionable strategies.
Acting as a team of AI-powered digital executives, each agent provides support across critical business functions, including finance, security and marketing.
This AI-driven guidance equips SME owners with operational insights that help them grow and protect their businesses more effectively.
Mastercard’s AI-enhanced data network
The Virtual C-Suite leverages Mastercard's proprietary insights from the billions of transactions processed annually on its network – estimated at 175 billion in just 2025 – combined with a company’s specific financial data.
This system is engineered to generate reliable, personalised recommendations on payments, collections and working capital management strategies.
Mastercard emphasises that AI is a “transformative opportunity” for small businesses, bridging “long-standing gaps in resources.”
Christopher Miller, Lead Analyst of Emerging Payments at Javelin Strategy & Research, observes: “Agents that offer big picture insights combined with unique and local analysis are becoming a critical human augmentation tool.
“Insights at this level have been available to large enterprises for years and agentic AI creates the opportunity for smaller organisations to benefit moving forward.”
Scaling expertise for the SME sector
SMEs represent nearly 90% of businesses and employ more than half of the global workforce, forming what Mastercard calls the “backbone of the global economy.”
The Virtual C-Suite aims to simplify operations while helping SMEs manage rising costs.
For companies with lean teams or multiple operational areas, this AI-powered system offers access to strategic expertise usually reserved for larger enterprises.
“Small businesses are the cornerstones of communities, but it’s easy for owners to lose sight of the passions that inspired them when they’re buried in spreadsheets and stretched across multiple roles,” explains Mark Barnett, Global Head of Small and Medium Enterprises at Mastercard.
“We hear these pressures from entrepreneurs every day. With Virtual C-Suite, we are bringing the innovative technology, quality data at scale, and strategic expertise usually available to large enterprises to small business owners.
“Our goal is to turn operational complexity into clarity – helping entrepreneurs regain time, make smarter decisions and translate their ambition into measurable growth.”
Integration and the Virtual CFO
Powered by agentic AI, the Virtual C-Suite integrates directly with the accounting systems, business software and banking applications that SMEs already rely on.
The first module, the Virtual CFO, is scheduled for release this year through financial institutions, accounting platforms and software providers.
It delivers user-friendly dashboards and conversational interfaces, enabling business owners to ask AI agents questions about cash flow fluctuations or underlying business trends.
Over time, Mastercard plans to expand the Virtual C-Suite with additional executive-function modules, allowing SME leaders to focus more on operating and growing their businesses rather than managing complex administrative tasks.
