Partnerships and Updates: Examining ChatGPT's Usage Doubling

OpenAI's collaborations with tech giants and industry leaders have significantly contributed to ChatGPT's explosive growth
OpenAI's recent data shows that ChatGPT usage has more than doubled since autumn 2023, and a combination of partnerships and updates could be the cause

In the burgeoning field of Gen AI, original breakout system ChatGPT has managed to retain its title as king among platforms as OpenAI data shows the chatbot now boasting over 200 million weekly active users.

The impressive figure represents a doubling since autumn 2023. Yet this has not been gained by merely a first movers advantage. No, the past six plus months have seen the offer updates and move to make partnerships.

Yet, some moves are more crucial than others. But a closer examination of OpenAI's recent developments and strategic partnerships can give insight into its crowning position of how it has managed to captivate users and businesses alike.

Enterprise adoption

One of the most significant catalysts behind ChatGPT's expansion has been its increasing penetration into the corporate world.

OpenAI reports that a whopping 92% of Fortune 500 companies are now utilising their products, signalling a seismic shift in how businesses approach AI integration.

The recent partnership between OpenAI and PwC, one of the "Big Four" accounting firms, exemplifies this trend.

PwC has inked a deal positioning itself as both the largest user and first official reseller of ChatGPT Enterprise. This expansive agreement will see over 100,000 employees across PwC's US and UK firms gain access to ChatGPT Enterprise's advanced capabilities, including unlimited usage of GPT-4, OpenAI's most sophisticated AI model to date.

Keeping pace with user demands

OpenAI's relentless pursuit of innovation has played a crucial role in maintaining ChatGPT's competitive edge. The company has consistently rolled out updates and new features to enhance the chatbot's functionality and user experience.

One such development is the introduction of GPT-4o mini, a more efficient offshoot of OpenAI's most powerful model. This release aligns with the growing industry trend towards creating smaller, more streamlined language models without compromising on performance.

Interestingly, the impact of these improvements is evident in the doubling of API usage since GPT-4o mini's launch in July.

Furthermore, OpenAI has recently unveiled an early prototype of SearchGPT, an AI-powered search feature that could potentially rival global search engines.

This move demonstrates the company's ambition to expand ChatGPT's capabilities beyond simple conversational AI, positioning it as a comprehensive tool for information retrieval and analysis.

Strategic partnerships

OpenAI's collaborations with tech giants and industry leaders have significantly contributed to ChatGPT's explosive growth.

The partnership with Apple, announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2024, marks a pivotal moment in ChatGPT's journey.

Apple and Nvidia are reportedly in talks to invest in OpenAI

This collaboration will see ChatGPT integrated into Apple's voice assistant, Siri, as part of the "Apple Intelligence" suite of AI-powered features.

By joining forces with one of the world's most valuable companies, OpenAI has opened up a vast new market for ChatGPT, potentially reaching millions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac users worldwide.

Beyond the tech sector, ChatGPT is making inroads into other industries. For instance, the chatbot has been integrated into Volkswagen's all-electric ID family of cars, accessible through the IDA voice assistant.

This application showcases ChatGPT's versatility and its potential to enhance user experiences across various domains.

OpenAI’s road ahead

The company's recent valuation of over US$80bn by investors underscores the high expectations placed on ChatGPT and OpenAI's other offerings. This new usage numbers will only stand to further boost that sentiment.

Yet as the AI race intensifies, OpenAI faces mounting pressure to maintain its competitive edge. Already, we are seeing a dividing line between tech titans as companies like Microsoft invest heavily in OpenAI where Amazon goes large on Anthropic.

Nevertheless, the future looks bright for ChatGPT. With its robust partnerships, commitment to innovation, and growing enterprise adoption, the chatbot is well-positioned to continue its remarkable ascent.
