Nvidia and xAI have joined forces with Microsoft, investment fund MGX and BlackRock to advance AI infrastructure in the US.

The partnership, announced while Nvidia’s GTC event is underway, comes amid a global surge in AI development.

The consortium aims to raise US$30bn from investors and companies, working towards a total of US$100bn to fund data centre construction and energy projects supporting Gen AI and other AI applications.

xAI, founded by Elon Musk, has been collaborating with Nvidia to accelerate supercomputing, and both companies are now focused on building the infrastructure needed to support AI-driven data centre expansion.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang

Jensen Huang, CEO at Nvidia, highlights the impact of AI infrastructure, stating: “The global buildout of AI infrastructure will benefit every company and country that wants to achieve economic growth and unlock solutions to the world’s greatest challenges.”

Addressing AI infrastructure challenges

The AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), as the consortium is called, is formed to meet the increasing demand for power and digital infrastructure brought on by AI’s rapid expansion.

With AI workloads requiring significantly higher levels of power, energy and water, existing data centres face mounting capacity constraints and environmental concerns.

The urgency to build AI-ready facilities is reshaping infrastructure discussions, as companies look for solutions that put AI at the core of future developments.

Alongside Nvidia and xAI, AIP includes Microsoft, BlackRock and Abu Dhabi-based investment fund MGX. While Nvidia has been providing technical expertise, it is now becoming a full partner, strengthening the consortium’s ability to shape future AI infrastructure.

AIP plans to leverage Nvidia’s expertise in accelerated computing and AI factories to develop next-generation data centres.

Jensen emphasises Nvidia’s role, saying: “AI factories built on NVIDIA’s full-stack AI infrastructure will convert data into intelligence that will accelerate every industry and help society achieve unimaginable breakthroughs.”

Energy companies GE Vernova and NextEra Energy have also signed on to support AIP’s efforts in scaling AI data centre energy solutions.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella

Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, stresses the importance of this investment, saying: “AI infrastructure will play an increasingly critical role in driving economic growth across every industry and every region of the world.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome these new companies to the AI Infrastructure Partnership as we invest together to build the infrastructure of the future.

US government backing for AI expansion

The AIP’s formation aligns with broader efforts in the US to strengthen AI infrastructure.

The US government has been pushing for major investments in AI data centre development to support the growing industry.

Earlier this year, former US President Joe Biden signed an executive order authorising the leasing of federal sites owned by the defence and energy departments. The move was aimed at facilitating the construction of gigawatt-scale AI data centres and clean power facilities to address the growing demand for AI computing power.

Biden explained the decision at the time, stating that the order would: “accelerate the speed at which we build the next generation of AI infrastructure here in America, in a way that enhances economic competitiveness, national security, AI safety and clean energy.”

Since taking office, President Donald Trump has also shown strong support for AI infrastructure. Earlier this year, he announced the launch of Stargate, an AI-focused initiative backed by SoftBank Group, OpenAI and Oracle.

Balancing AI growth and sustainability

The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has raised sustainability concerns however, as AI-driven data centres require vast amounts of electricity.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centre energy consumption could exceed 1,000 terawatt-hours by 2026—more than double the amount used in 2022.

As AI adoption accelerates, balancing technological advancement with environmental responsibility remains a critical challenge. With companies investing billions into AI-driven infrastructure, AIP’s focus on energy-efficient solutions will play a key role in shaping the industry’s future.
