Reddit Launches AI Search to Extract Value From Forums

Reddit has launched its AI-powered Reddit Answers
Social network Reddit creates machine learning tool to summarise 20 years of user-generated content, as social media firms compete on search capabilities

Reddit, the user-generated content and discussion platform with 100 million monthly active users, has released an AI system for extracting information from its archive of conversations dating to 2005.

Reddit Answers uses machine learning models to process natural language queries. The system analyses posts across Reddit's 100,000 communities, known as subreddits, to generate summaries of relevant discussions.

The launch comes as social media platforms invest in search capabilities. Meta, which operates Instagram and Facebook, has developed AI-enabled search functions to help users discover content and connect with content creators. Music streaming company Spotify employs AI algorithms to identify emerging trends and create personalised playlists based on listening patterns.

Reddit Answers differs by focusing on information retrieval rather than content discovery. The system accepts questions in conversational language and returns synthesised answers drawn from multiple discussion threads.

Social platforms grapple with search limitations

Traditional search engines struggle to surface relevant information from social media discussions due to the unstructured nature of user conversations. Reddit's existing search function requires users to browse multiple conversation threads manually.

Key features of Reddit Answers:
  • AI-powered conversational interface
  • Curated summaries
  • Inline snippets
  • Links to related communities
  • Follow-up questions

"With Reddit Answers, redditors can ask questions and receive answers using a new, AI-powered conversational interface," Reddit states in its announcement. "Once a question is asked, curated summaries of relevant conversations and details across Reddit will appear, including links to related communities and posts."

The system maintains links to source material, allowing users to verify summaries against original discussions. This approach aims to provide transparency around the AI's information synthesis.

Interactive capabilities enhance Reddit's AI search deployment

The system allows users to ask follow-up questions, simulating natural conversation patterns. This feature distinguishes Reddit Answers from static search results common on other platforms.

Users can read answer snippets within search results or access complete discussions. This functionality reduces time spent manually searching conversation threads.

Pali Bhat, Reddit's Chief Product Officer, said in an interview with McKinsey earlier this year that the company aims to make its discussion archive accessible globally: "At Reddit, we are committed to democratising conversations globally."

Reddit has commenced deployment of Reddit Answers to a subset of US-based users, with support limited to English language queries during initial testing. The company plans to add support for additional languages and regions based on testing results.

Pali emphasises the need for careful implementation of AI systems: "Once you commit to understanding how an AI and ML pipeline would work, the next step is to figure out where you sit in the value chain," he told McKinsey

The deployment approach enables Reddit to gather user feedback before expanding availability. The platform's position as a repository of community knowledge presents specific challenges in information accessibility.

"You have to be thoughtful about your data, because if it is being ingested by some Gen AI, there could be risks on the regulatory side or confidential information could leak," Pali notes, addressing potential concerns about data usage in AI systems.

The integration of AI into Reddit's search functionality marks a shift in how users interact with the platform's content archive. By implementing natural language processing and conversation summarisation, Reddit aims to reduce barriers to accessing its knowledge base.

"Once you understand how you're using ML and AI, you'll know what skills you need," Pali states.
