Baidu Expands AI Offerings with Ernie 4.5 and Ernie X1

The global AI race is becoming increasingly competitive as technology firms push to develop more advanced foundation models while keeping costs low.
Nowhere is this more evident than in China, where companies are working to match the capabilities of Western AI providers while offering pricing structures that could alter the market.
DeepSeek recently made waves by launching its R1 model, which claims to rival leading AI systems at significantly lower costs, prompting a reassessment of value and pricing strategies across the industry.
Following this trend, Baidu has now introduced two new foundation models—Ernie 4.5 and Ernie X1—aiming to expand its AI capabilities while reshaping monetisation strategies.
These models are now freely available to individual users through Baidu's Ernie Bot platform, a move that suggests pricing strategies may be just as crucial as technical performance in determining AI adoption.
Baidu's decision to provide free consumer access ahead of its previously scheduled April 1 release date, while keeping enterprise pricing substantially lower than competitors, signals a shift in how AI services are commercialised.
Enterprise users and developers can access Ernie 4.5 through APIs on Baidu AI Cloud’s Qianfan platform, with Ernie X1 set to be available soon.
Baidu positions these models as direct challengers to OpenAI’s GPT series, reflecting its ambition to compete at the highest level of the AI industry.
Ernie 4.5: Advancing Multimodal AI at a Competitive Cost
Ernie 4.5 is Baidu’s latest internally developed foundation model, designed to process multiple types of data simultaneously for enhanced comprehension.
The model achieves improved performance through a technique called FlashMask Dynamic Attention Masking, which enables it to focus on relevant sections of input data, and Heterogeneous Multimodal Mixture-of-Experts, which allows different components of the system to specialise in processing distinct types of information.
- Advanced multimodal capabilities
- Improved performance at lower cost
- Enhanced reasoning and contextual awareness
A key strength of Ernie 4.5 is its ability to integrate text, images, audio and video, enabling a more contextual understanding of content, including internet memes and satirical cartoons.
Baidu highlights this as evidence of the model’s “high EQ,” or emotional intelligence, as it can interpret humour and nuanced cultural references.
Baidu states that Ernie 4.5 has “excellent multimodal understanding ability. It has more advanced language ability and its understanding, generation, logic and memory abilities are comprehensively improved.”
This suggests a focus on not just comprehension, but also the model’s ability to generate content and retain contextual awareness over time.
Ernie X1: Enhancing Deep Reasoning and Tool Use
Ernie X1 represents Baidu’s first deep-thinking multimodal reasoning model with integrated tool use.
The company describes it as capable of “stronger understanding, planning, reflection and evolution capabilities” and claims it offers performance similar to DeepSeek R1 but at half the price.
- Enhanced reasoning capabilities
- Extensive tool integration
- Competitive performance at lower cost
Designed for complex reasoning tasks, Ernie X1 excels in areas such as knowledge-based queries, literary creation, logical problem-solving and mathematical calculations.
The model supports a wide range of integrated tools, including advanced search functions, document-based question-answering, image generation and understanding, code interpretation and specialised search features for academic, business and franchise information.
Key technical advances in Ernie X1 include a Progressive Reinforcement Learning Method, which enables the model to improve through feedback, and an End-to-End Training Approach Integrating Chains of Thought and Action, which combines logical reasoning pathways with actions the model can take.
These innovations allow Ernie X1 to evolve in response to new information, making it more adaptable to a variety of tasks.
Future Integration Across Baidu’s Ecosystem
Baidu plans to incorporate Ernie 4.5 and X1 throughout its product ecosystem, including its search engine, which has over 600 million users, as well as the Wenxiaoyan application and other company services.
This integration could enhance Baidu’s AI-powered offerings, positioning the company as a leader in the next generation of AI development. Baidu states that Ernie X1 “delivers performance on par with DeepSeek R1 at only half the price.”
