Colt DCS expands Germany’s digital infrastructure with four new AI-ready data centres, supporting the growth of hyperscale, cloud and the digital economy

Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) is committing €2bn (US$2.2bn) to expand its hyperscale footprint in Germany, bringing 117MW of new capacity online across Berlin and Frankfurt.

The move reflects rising demand for AI  infrastructure, high-performance computing (HPC) and scalable, sustainable data centres that power Europe’s digital economy.

The four new facilities – Berlin 1 and 2, Frankfurt 4 and 5 – will increase Colt DCS’s total capacity in Germany to 176MW.

This positions the company to meet enterprise and hyperscale needs as AI adoption and cloud transformation continue to reshape global digital infrastructure.

Supporting AI and HPC at scale

As AI workloads grow more demanding, the infrastructure that supports them must evolve.

Colt DCS is responding with hyperscale data centres purpose-built to handle intensive computing requirements.

Each of the four new data centres will be based on Colt DCS’s Global Reference Design (GRD), a standardised blueprint that allows for racks delivering up to 130kW. This is particularly suitable for AI and HPC environments that require extremely dense compute configurations.

The Berlin sites will deliver 54MW of IT capacity on a 9.5-acre plot, while Frankfurt’s facilities will offer 63MW on 18 acres.

Construction of Berlin 1 and Frankfurt 4 is scheduled to be ready for service by the end of 2028. According to Colt DCS, renewable energy contracts are already secured, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the expansion.

Niclas Sanfridsson, Chief Executive Officer of Colt DCS, says: "The continued growth in digital services has created strong demand for hyperscale data centres in Germany.

“Our acquisitions in Frankfurt and Berlin are a testament to our commitment to Europe’s largest economy. We are proud to contribute to the growth of the local community and remain a trusted partner for our customers worldwide.

“These new sites will not only enhance our capacity to serve the increasing needs of cloud and AI workloads but also reinforce our dedication to sustainability and innovation in the data centre industry.”

Infrastructure designed for sustainability

ESG measures are central to Colt DCS’s build strategy.

Each facility includes features aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Plans incorporate waste heat recovery to contribute to local district heating networks, low Global Warming Potential (GWP) chillers to lower embodied carbon and 20% of each plot is designated as green space to maintain biodiversity.

Roofs will be covered with vegetation and photovoltaic solar panels to generate on-site renewable energy.

These measures aim to set a new benchmark for low-carbon, AI-ready hyperscale development in Europe. They also reflect Colt DCS’s broader ambition to lead sustainable innovation in the data centre sector.

Strategic dual-hub model for AI-led growth

Germany continues to be a crucial market in Europe’s data centre ecosystem.

Frankfurt remains a dominant connectivity hub, while Berlin is rapidly emerging as a secondary location thanks to its expanding digital economy and AI innovation scene.

Colt DCS’s expansion follows a strategic dual-hub model, allowing it to diversify capacity and provide multi-site deployments for enterprise clients.

This setup enhances geographic redundancy, ensures service continuity and supports AI deployment across both locations.

Frankfurt offers dense interconnection opportunities, while Berlin is ideal for future capacity and technical talent availability.

Both cities have access to evolving renewable energy infrastructure, aligning with Colt DCS’s sustainability goals.

The mayor of Wiesbaden, Gert-Uwe Mende, highlights the regional impact of the development, noting: “Wiesbaden is an attractive business location, and artificial intelligence is an absolutely future-oriented topic.

“I am therefore very pleased that Colt DCS has chosen the Landeshauptstadt (capital of the state of Hessen) as the site for its new data centre.”

Enabling the digital economy across Europe

As cloud adoption and AI maturity accelerate across Europe, demand for hyperscale infrastructure is surging.

Colt DCS’s €2bn (US$2.2bn) investment ensures the company can meet this need, enabling organisations to access dense compute environments optimised for machine learning, data analytics and real-time processing.

Enterprises expanding their digital operations can leverage Colt DCS’s growing footprint for enhanced performance, availability and operational efficiency. The dual-hub model also supports decentralised architectures, a growing trend in AI deployment strategies.

By integrating renewable energy, high-density computing and future-proof design, Colt DCS is helping shape the foundation of Europe’s digital economy—delivering the infrastructure that fuels data, automation and intelligence across sectors.
