The Paris AI Action Summit 2025
The Coalition for Sustainable AI is a new multi-stakeholder global initiative to ensure AI development aligns with sustainability objectives

The unprecedented rise of artificial intelligence (AI) brings great opportunities for advancing people and industry, but it also presents challenges for the environment and the impact we have on the planet. As the technological landscape expands, the need to harness AI in a more sustainable way is imperative.

At the AI Action Summit in Paris, February 2025, the spotlight was on sustainable AI as attendees discussed the ethical development and application of AI technologies. In response to these discussions, the Coalition for Sustainable AI was launched at the summit.

We, the members and supporters of the Coalition for Sustainable AI, affirm our collective commitment to leverage the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) to progress towards the UN Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), focusing in this Coalition on those related to climate action and protection of our environment

Created to represent a powerful international response, the coalition brings together many stakeholders to ensure that our focus on developing AI and its applications also supports the planet’s health.

It aims to mitigate AI’s environmental footprint while leveraging the technology to help solve complex ecological issues such as pollution reduction, biodiversity protection and promoting decarbonisation.

Purpose of the Coalition for Sustainable AI

The coalition recognizes that AI will be an essential and defining infrastructure in the 21st century equal in importance to the likes of the energy, transport and health infrastructure. With the capability to reshape economic landscapes, AI also holds the potential to vastly improve our approach to environmental conservation.

Coalition for Sustainable AI has launched

The creation of the coalition underscores this generation's urgent dual imperatives: advancing digital technology and protecting the environment. It acknowledges that AI’s dramatic impact needs steering to benefit rather than harm our world.

Operational goals and growth of the coalition

The primary mission of the coalition is two-fold: lessening the ecological impacts of AI and deploying the technology to confront broader environmental challenges. It acts as a hub for sharing best practices globally, offering a systematic approach to integrating environmental considerations into AI development and applications.

Moreover, the coalition fosters the development of tools and methods that improve reporting and reduce the environmental footprint of AI. Its formation was spearheaded by France, along with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), supported by a host of other organisations dedicated to this cause.

Boris Gamazaychikov, Head of AI Sustainability at Salesforce, says of the collaboration: “I’m proud that Salesforce is one of the initial members, and I hope that many more join on this critical journey.

“Thanks to the French Government, the UN Environment Programme, and the International Telecommunication Union for organising this important initiative.”

This coalition sets the precedent for ongoing global discourse around AI and sustainability, and ensures the momentum of merging AI with sustainable practices continues. It aims to influence future high-level discussions and international agreements on sustainable technology use, driving the global movement towards greener AI solutions.
