TEKEVER Hits Unicorn Status with AI Defence Ambitions

TEKEVER’s leap to unicorn status signals a sharp acceleration in the fusion of AI, defence and pan-European technology development.
The Lisbon-founded company, now valued at more than £1bn (US$1.3bn), secures its position among Europe’s top-tier tech firms after a successful funding round backed by Ventura Capital, Baillie Gifford and the NATO Innovation Fund.
Its focus? Building battlefield-ready AI-centric autonomous systems that not only enhance military capability but also reshape how defence technologies are created and deployed across Europe.

Combat-proven AI technology
TEKEVER’s core systems are unmanned aerial systems (UAS), including the AR3 and AR5 drones.
These drones are designed to operate autonomously using AI software that adapts in real-time to battlefield conditions.
These aircraft have now recorded more than 10,000 combat flight hours, including extensive deployment in Ukraine, where they’ve operated in some of the world’s most contested electronic warfare environments.
Their impact is measurable: More than £3bn (US$4bn) of Russian military assets, including the S-400 air defence systems, have been disabled with support from TEKEVER’s technology.
What sets TEKEVER apart is not only the AI integration but the company's ability to update these drones rapidly based on operational feedback.
More than 100 field upgrades have already been implemented, spanning hardware materials, propulsion systems and software enhancements.
These continual refinements are designed to ensure systems remain relevant and capable on active deployment.
Ricardo Mendes, CEO of TEKEVER, says: “The future of Europe relies on more than just increased defence spending — we need to transform our industrial base and be smarter about investments.
“TEKEVER’s experience deploying autonomous systems in Ukraine has shown us that the future of defence is about agility more than anything.
“That’s why we are launching our new strategy focused on establishing a defence innovation ecosystem that empowers companies of all sizes to innovate at pace and scale with the shared mission of securing the future of Europe.
“This latest funding round will help us deliver that mission. The continued backing from our investors, including Baillie Gifford and the NATO Innovation Fund, reflects their confidence in our vision, technology and long-term success.”
OVERMATCH: Redefining Europe’s defence landscape
The funding round coincides with the launch of TEKEVER’s five-year development strategy for the UK: OVERMATCH.
This £400m (US$535.4m) programme aims to transform the defence industry with a clear focus on AI and autonomous technology.
OVERMATCH centres on four main objectives:
Creating Centres of Excellence in autonomy, bringing together academia, start-ups and defence players
Expanding production and testing capacity across Europe to accelerate the deployment of AI-driven systems
Scaling production hubs for faster, more flexible responses to battlefield requirements
Building an inclusive innovation ecosystem across borders, uniting companies of all sizes.
This strategy isn't just about technology — it’s about setting the infrastructure for a pan-European defence ecosystem built on collaboration, speed and AI capability.
John Ridge, Chief Adoption Officer at the NATO Innovation Fund, says: “Not only is TEKEVER integrating increasingly sophisticated AI and software into their platforms, it is now also forging innovative new partnerships between government and industry to help transform Europe’s industrial base.
“We are committed to fully supporting TEKEVER’s project OVERMATCH, which will catalyse the development of AI and autonomy in the UK, create thousands of high-skilled jobs and help NATO unlock the potential of new technology to deal with an increasingly complex security environment in Europe.”
Partnering for AI-led security
The NATO Innovation Fund, one of TEKEVER’s investors, sees this as an investment in the broader AI and technology landscape in Europe.
This collaboration between government, industry and academia is designed to speed up the innovation cycle, reduce barriers to entry for smaller players and ultimately strengthen Europe's autonomous defence posture.
Chris Evdaimon, Investment Manager, Private Companies at Baillie Gifford, says: “The global defence and security landscape is rapidly changing and TEKEVER is well-placed to capture the opportunities emerging in this sector.
“With its vertically-integrated model and extensive operational experience in Ukraine, TEKEVER is driving the transformation of Europe’s defence capabilities and leading a new generation of agile, software-centric defence primes.”
The company’s vertically-integrated model — meaning it controls multiple stages of development and production — gives it flexibility and control in delivering AI-led systems quickly to the front line.
Europe’s AI defence future
TEKEVER’s trajectory reflects a broader shift in how defence is conceived and delivered.
By focusing on AI and autonomy, the company taps into a critical area of strategic need.
Its work in Ukraine offers a real-world testbed for these technologies, proving that adaptability, speed and software-led platforms can make a material difference on the ground.
With OVERMATCH now in motion and the backing of both private and institutional investors, TEKEVER aims to build not just systems, but a defence technology infrastructure suited to Europe’s evolving needs.
