The EU, producing over 2.1 billion tonnes of waste annually, is updating its circular economy legislation for more sustainable practices driven by AI

The European Union reports that it generates over 2.1 billion tonnes of waste annually.

In response, it is updating its legislation to promote a circular economy, aiming to move away from the current take-make-consume-throw away model.

This will transition the EU from its current approach of take-make-consume-throw away.

Sustainability LIVE London is back from the 9-10th of September

At Sustainability LIVE London, Carbmee’s workshop named “Carbon Intelligence and Circular Strategy: Reaching KPIs using AI Power” will explore this dilemma – and explain to leaders how to turn circulatory data into CO₂ insights.

The importance of an effective circular economy

A circular economy involves a transformative model of production and consumption through practices such as sharing, leasing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling.

The core objective of this model is to extend the life cycle of products.

When fully implemented, the EU projects that this approach will significantly reduce waste, allowing materials to stay within the economy to continually create value rather than being used once and discarded.

In an effort to support this model, the European Parliament is advocating for regulatory measures to tackle planned obsolescence – a tactic where products are intentionally designed for limited lifespans to boost repeat purchases.

A crucial legislative proposal in place is the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which mandates manufacturers to incorporate design principles focusing on extended product life and reduced carbon footprint.

AI’s role in lowering emissions

Carbmee presents a compelling case for AI-driven carbon intelligence as a method for companies to make informed, data-driven decisions.

By using AI, Carbmee supports the practice of a circular economy to meet carbon reduction key performance indicators.

As the company puts it, the circular economy not only cuts down the demand for raw materials but also minimises embedded emissions.

For instance, “using recycled aluminium only requires 5% of the energy needed to produce the same amount of raw materials,” Carbmee says.

Furthermore, extending product life cycles can significantly diminish Scope 3 emissions, particularly in sectors such as electronics, automotive and industrial manufacturing.

According to Christian Heinrich, Co-founder of Carbmee: “With over 80% of emissions being rooted in the supply chain, we have built a platform that not only meets the evolving needs of complex industry enterprises but also plays a critical role in the global shift toward sustainability.”
