Watershed: The data platform behind climate action
Founded in 2019, San Francisco-based Watershed positions itself as a climate-tech platform designed for large enterprises working to meet net-zero goals with measurable outcomes. Its combines data collection, decarbonisation planning and audit-ready reporting in a single software platform.
Watershed provides carbon accounting tools that cover scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. These refer to:
- Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity
- Scope 3: All other indirect emissions in the value chain, including suppliers and distribution
Using this approach, companies are able to isolate emission sources by vendor, category or geography. Clients such as Walmart, Stripe, BBVA and Airbnb use the software to manage the full climate programme – from collecting environmental data to reducing emissions – in one place.
The company also integrates compliance capabilities. Through Watershed Disclosures, it helps sustainability and finance teams manage fragmented climate data while aligning with recognised frameworks such as CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) and TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures). Outputs are adapted for legal and audit requirements.
Watershed for CSRD is its latest tool for navigating the European Union’s new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This platform covers more than 1,100 ESG data points, helping companies complete mandatory reports with system checks for missing or inaccurate data.
