Britain and the US have agreed a £31bn 'Tech Prosperity Deal', with Microsoft, Nvidia and Google backing AI, cloud & quantum computing growth in the UK

A landmark US$38.7bn technology agreement between the US and the UK has positioned AI development and quantum computing at the heart of future bilateral cooperation, attracting substantial investments from leading technology companies.

The 'Tech Prosperity Deal' establishes a framework for enhanced collaboration in AI research and development, with major commitments from tech giants including Microsoft, Nvidia, Google and CoreWeave.

How the UK will level up its AI game

Microsoft's US$27.5bn investment is the cornerstone of this agreement. A sizeable part of Microsoft's investment will be used to establish the UK's most advanced AI supercomputer to date.

The project, developed in partnership with OpenAI and UK-based Nscale, will be located in Loughton, near London.

"We want to ensure that America remains a trusted and reliable tech partner for Britain," says Satya Nadella, Microsoft's Chair & CEO.

Elsewhere, Brad Smith, Microsoft's President, has pointed to the firm's improving relations with UK regulators, noting that he feels "enormously better" following the Competition and Markets Authority's resolution regarding his company's Activision Blizzard acquisition.

A era of computing for Britain

Nvidia's commitment includes its largest European deployment of 120,000 GPUs, specifically designed for AI and data-intensive applications.

The company will also supply up to 60,000 Grace Blackwell Ultra chips through its partnership with Nscale.

David Hogan, Vice President for Enterprise at Nvidia, says: "These investments will truly make the UK an AI maker, not an AI taker."

Google has pledged a further US$6.2bn, which will go towards a new data centre north of London, while maintaining its AI research through DeepMind.

CoreWeave will also invest US$1.9bn in the UK, supporting energy-efficient data centres in collaboration with Scottish operator DataVita.

The agreement creates a robust foundation for AI development and deployment across both nations.

Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the UK, is rolling out a strategy that could position the UK as one of the world's most attractive destinations for AI investment, adopting a regulatory approach more aligned with US practices than EU frameworks.

"This Tech Prosperity Deal marks a generational step change in our relationship with the US, shaping the futures of millions of people on both sides of the Atlantic, and delivering growth, security and opportunity up and down the country," Starmer says.

Additional commitments from Salesforce, Scale AI, BlackRock, Oracle and AWS will further strengthen the technological partnership between the two nations, particularly in AI applications, data processing and enterprise solutions.

Liz Kendall, the UK's Technology Secretary is just as effusive as Starmer in her praise of the new deal.

"This is a vote of confidence in Britain’s booming AI sector – building on British success stories such as Arm, Wayve and Google Deepmind – that will boost growth and deliver tens of thousands of skilled jobs," she explains.

All in all, this collaboration speaks to a real strategic alignment in AI development and quantum computing capabilities, which could help the UK to kickstart its economy after a long period of stagnation.
