Can Proofpoint’s AI Agents Prevent Enterprise Data Losses?

Proofpoint has introduced an innovative agentic AI solution for Human Communications Intelligence (HCI), marking a key advancement in real-time digital communication security monitoring.
The company, which serves approximately 85% of Fortune 100 companies, has developed this solution to address the growing security challenges in digital workplace communications.
The technology moves beyond traditional post-incident analysis methods to offer real-time risk detection capabilities.
A pressing concern among CISOs has been the security vulnerabilities in everyday workplace communication platforms.
Research indicates that over one-third of CISOs globally identify collaboration tools such as Slack, Teams and Zoom as their primary security vulnerability, ranking these platforms as more concerning than Gen AI chatbots, perimeter devices, cloud storage and Microsoft 365.
Inside Proofpoint’s AI-powered language analysis
Unlike conventional compliance systems that rely on keyword detection, Proofpoint’s solution employs sophisticated AI to interpret human intent across more than 80 communication channels simultaneously.
“Legacy connectors are merely proxies that pass content downstream, offering little intelligence,” says Harry Labana, SVP & GM of Proofpoint's DCG business.
“Proofpoint has reimagined capture by moving beyond simply collecting messages to interpreting and reasoning in real time.”
The technology, built upon Proofpoint’s acquisition of Nuclei, implements what the company terms “true agentic AI”, enabling contextual understanding of conversations rather than simple trigger-based responses.
A new kind of risk assessment
The Proofpoint Capture system processes communications from various sources, including generative AI chatbots, mobile messaging applications, collaboration platforms, social media, email, voice communications and file transfers.
AI agents within the system autonomously evaluate conversations and provide detailed explanations for risk assessments, covering areas such as misconduct, insider threats, AI misuse, regulatory violations and toxic workplace culture indicators.
The system’s transparency helps compliance reviewers understand alert reasoning, moving away from opaque classification systems.
According to Proofpoint, their AI-powered supervision can analyse all captured communications while reducing false positives by up to 90% compared to traditional keyword-based systems.
How will Proofpoint roll out this tech?
The Human Communications Intelligence system works in conjunction with Proofpoint’s Insider Threat Management platform, creating a comprehensive system that correlates communication-based risk indicators with user behaviour across endpoint devices.
This integration establishes a real-time feedback loop connecting employee communications with their digital activities, enabling organisations to identify potential risks through both communication patterns and digital behaviour.
The solution is immediately available with Nuclei technology-powered Human Communications Intelligence agents.
Enhanced AI features, including new large language models for Proofpoint Supervision, will roll out in Q4 2025, while integration with the Insider Threat Management system is set for Q1 2026.
The solution targets enterprises in regulated and highly litigious industries where communication compliance is crucial.
Currently, 85% of Fortune 100 companies utilise Proofpoint’s digital communications governance solutions.
