Moving way beyond search, Perplexity’s new agentic browser and deep Microsoft 365 integrations allow AI to actively pilot desktop files and local apps

Perplexity is trying to break AI out of its search box through a software that works directly inside active desktop programmes.

Traditional interfaces require users to copy and paste data between separate applications continuously.

The company tries to remove that manual friction by allowing the system to coordinate tasks across connected apps and files through a new orchestration software.

It achieves this through Comet, an AI-powered web browser launched on 9 July 2025 which automates background research and task execution.

Perplexity expanded this capability further by embedding the Computer orchestration system technology directly into corporate workspaces through Microsoft 365 in two distinct phases.

The software firm first launched Computer in Microsoft Teams on 4 May 2026 to let users initiate projects within communication channels.

Perplexity then expanded the software on 28 May 2026 by rolling out native add-in side panels into Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

By acting as a central coordinator across these platforms, the system can pull live data from the web, read local spreadsheets and update corporate documents simultaneously.

Driving background task automation

Comet is built on the Chromium framework which provides automated research and task summarisation.

While it initially debuted exclusively for premium Max subscribers, the company expanded access later that year.

By 2 October 2025, Perplexity made the browser globally accessible for free on desktop devices.

The platform immediately attracted specialised enterprise users through a strategic partnership with Coinbase.

On 10 July 2025, the digital currency wallet and platform integrated real-time cryptocurrency data and the COIN50 index directly into the browser.

Perplexity then expanded this capability in March 2026 by launching an Enterprise version of Comet.

This version introduces advanced security layers specifically designed for automated workflows in financial sectors.

Desktop to manage hybrid local processing

To transition from browser-based tasks to complete operating system control, the technology evolved into a much larger orchestration system known as Computer.

The software acts as a centralised coordinator which routes complex tasks to leading AI models simultaneously.

The system performed more than US$4.4bn in labour-equivalent work for users within three months of its initial rollout.

This infrastructure operates inside a secure sandbox equipped with a real filesystem to execute multi-step workflows.

A redesigned application for macOS brings these agentic capabilities directly to local hardware.

Perplexity developed a hybrid local-server framework alongside Intel to manage the heavy processing requirements.

Routine tasks like basic text formatting are processed locally using the internal processor of the computer.

This hybrid distribution model keeps sensitive personal files securely on the device while sending complex reasoning tasks to the cloud.

Microsoft 365 automates office workflows

The most significant enterprise update arrived when Perplexity embedded its technology directly into corporate workspaces.

Perplexity launched Computer inside Microsoft Teams on 4 May 2026 to let users initiate projects within communication channels.

The company offers native add-in side panels inside Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Before this integration, nearly 40% of Computer users manually copied and pasted AI outputs into Microsoft formats.

The native add-ins allow paying Pro, Max, Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max customers to automate tasks without leaving their active window.

For instance, in Excel, users can build a three-statement model from a 10-K document pulled via a SharePoint connector.

In Word, the system can analyse a new contract redline against a standard corporate template to generate an issues list.

The application also automatically creates PowerPoint decks from Excel charts and scans Outlook threads to draft comprehensive meeting briefs.

The platform relies on enterprise-grade infrastructure featuring SAML SSO, audit logs and granular administrative controls.

The human user remains in control of the workflow by reviewing and approving every specific action before it executes.

Perplexity cites the exact source of every answer and the precise provenance of every figure it generates to ensure verification.

By moving beyond traditional search, the company is positioning its software to challenge the dominance of established desktop operating systems.

For decades, operating platforms have functioned as passive tool benches where humans must manually transfer data between separate applications.

Perplexity Computer establishes a new paradigm where the software actively navigates the workspace to complete multi-step business projects independently.

As the technology integrates further into enterprise workflows, the traditional desktop interface may soon be replaced by a single, unified AI coordinator that drives the computer on behalf of the user.
