Making a difference

Born and raised in London, Mustafa’s early path was shaped by a desire to make a difference. After attending Mansfield College at the University of Oxford for a year, he left at 19 and helped establish the Muslim Youth Helpline, which became one of the UK’s largest telephone counselling services for Muslims.

He later worked at Reos Partners, advising clients including the United Nations, the Dutch government and the World Wide Fund for Nature. This broad exposure to global challenges laid the groundwork for his later commitment to applying technology for societal benefit.

In 2010, Mustafa co-founded DeepMind alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg. As Chief Product Officer, he played a central role in turning the company into a global leader in AI, culminating in its acquisition by Google in 2014.

At DeepMind, he also helped launch DeepMind Ethics & Society, a pioneering initiative exploring the real-world implications of AI systems.

After leaving Google in 2022, he co-founded Inflection, a company focused on generative AI applications. In 2023, Inflection launched Pi, a personalised intelligence platform designed to offer natural conversation and supportive guidance.

Mustafa described Pi as “a new kind of AI… with good EQ”, positioning it as a digital companion rather than just a tool.

Leading Microsoft AI

In 2024, Mustafa was appointed CEO of Microsoft AI to run the company’s new consumer AI unit. He joined alongside long-time collaborator Karén Simonyan and a team of Inflection staff, signalling Microsoft’s commitment to accelerating its AI ambitions.

At Microsoft, Mustafa oversees some of the company’s most widely used AI products, including Copilot, Bing and Edge. His role places him at the nexus of research and real-world deployment, ensuring that AI becomes more accessible, useful and safe for businesses and consumers alike.

Microsoft’s strategy has already been strengthened by major AI investments, including its partnership with OpenAI.

Mustafa’s leadership helps translate these developments into practical tools that can reshape productivity and digital experiences worldwide.

Driving responsible innovation

Beyond product innovation, Mustafa has become one of the most prominent voices advocating for responsible AI governance.

As Co-Chair of the Partnership on AI, he has consistently argued that governments and companies must work together to ensure the technology develops safely.

In 2025, he publicly warned about the emerging phenomenon of “AI psychosis”, where users develop delusional beliefs through interactions with increasingly human-like chatbots.

Mustafa emphasised that while there is “zero evidence of AI consciousness today”, the perception of consciousness can still have serious societal consequences.

He has called for stricter industry standards to prevent misleading claims about AI capabilities.

Mustafa Suleyman’s influence stems from a rare combination of entrepreneurial success, technical leadership and ethical clarity. From DeepMind to Inflection and now Microsoft AI, he has helped shape the AI revolution at every stage.
