Meta introduces tiered AI subscriptions and enhanced social platform features as it seeks to diversify revenue streams beyond traditional advertising model

The AI wave is washing over social media, with social media giant Meta planning to introduce paid subscription tiers for AI tools across its social media platforms.

The company has created an umbrella brand called Meta One to package these new offerings.

The strategy includes two paid AI subscriptions – Meta One Plus, which costs US$7.99 per month and Meta One Premium that would cost US$19.99 per month.

The paid tiers unlock additional computing power for complex tasks and advanced video and image generation capabilities.

The Premium plan also provides users with greater capacity for high compute queries.

Monetising AI access

Naomi Gleit, Head of Product at Meta, says that the AI plans could give users "more to work with, more capacity, bigger, more complex requests and more room to create for businesses and creators".

Naomi explains on Instagram that the company aims to offer premium tools to help users "enhance presence, supercharge content, automate tasks and protect [their] brand".

The AI subscription launch follows the recent debut of Meta's Muse Spark AI model. Meta Superintelligence Labs developed the model under the leadership of Alexandr Wang, who joined from Scale AI last year during Mark Zuckerberg's headline-grabbing recruitment drive.

These AI tiers will start testing next month in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia. Meta plans to integrate benefits for its AI glasses in the future.

Social platform subscriptions

Meta is launching global Plus subscription plans for its social platforms:

  • Instagram Plus (US$3.99/mo) offers advanced analytics like aggregate Story rewatch statistics, the ability to extend Stories past 24 hours and custom profile fonts
  • Facebook Plus (US$3.99/mo) provides a similar suite of expression and tracking tools
  • WhatsApp Plus (US$2.99/mo) focuses on personalisation with exclusive chat themes, custom ringtones and extra pinned chats

Meta is piloting higher end tiers for professional users in select international markets.

The Meta One Essential plan costs US$14.99 per month and bundles verification with bio linking tools.

The Meta One Advanced plan on the other hand costs US$49.99 per month and offers growth features such as search visibility boosts and automated follow invitations.

Current Meta Verified service will continue to operate independently.

    Revenue diversification strategy

The subscription push represents an effort by Meta to extract additional value from established social media markets.

According to Meta's Q1 2026 report, the non advertising segment generated US$1.29bn in the first quarter compared to US$55bn from advertising.

Wall Street responded to the news by sending Meta's stock up roughly 3% to 4% following the announcements.

By adopting paid models similar to OpenAI and Google, Meta could position itself to monetise consumer AI at scale.
