Klarna Plugs Practical Agentic Commerce Into ChatGPT
Klarna has integrated its shopping search functionality into ChatGPT through a dedicated app available on OpenAI's conversational AI platform.
The integration connects ChatGPT users to Klarna's merchant network. Consumers can discover and compare products through conversational queries without leaving the ChatGPT interface.
The deployment represents a practical application of agentic AI in commerce. Users interact with the system through natural language rather than traditional search interfaces.
How AI platforms are reshaping commerce
According to Adobe, AI platforms generated traffic increases to retail sites during the 2025 holiday season.
Traffic from AI platforms to retail sites grew more than 700%. Shoppers arriving from these platforms showed a conversion rate of 31%.
The data could indicate changing patterns in how consumers initiate product searches. AI interfaces may be replacing traditional search engines for certain shopping behaviours.
Klarna's integration attempts to capitalise on this shift. The company positions its technology at the intersection of conversational AI and commerce transactions.
What is Klarna's Product Search MCP?
Klarna has connected its Product Search MCP server to ChatGPT's infrastructure.
The server provides access to live commerce data covering more than 100 million products across 13 markets. The system includes 400 million merchant listings.
Users describe products through conversational input. The AI returns visual results showing availability, pricing and merchant offers within the chat interface.
After selection, users are directed to merchant sites to complete purchases. The transaction occurs outside the ChatGPT environment.
Conversational interface design
The system maintains conversational context as users shop. Consumers provide descriptions of desired products rather than structured search queries.
Results appear with merchant information and pricing data. Retailers appear based on relevance, with sponsored listings clearly labelled.
David Sykes, Chief Commercial Officer at Klarna, says: "ChatGPT is where millions of people already turn when they're figuring out what they want.
"We're plugging our merchant network directly into that moment. A consumer who last week would have spent twenty minutes comparing tabs now gets a real answer in one conversation, creating a more seamless experience from idea to purchase."
The expansion of AI in the finance sector
OpenAI's ChatGPT is being adopted by financial institutions for consumer services.
NatWest became the first UK bank to launch a dedicated app within the ChatGPT platform. According to the bank, 56% of British adults now use AI for financial advice.
The NatWest integration targets home buying decisions. Users input income and expenditure data to receive mortgage advice, borrowing estimates and deposit scenarios.
The bank routes users to official channels when they are ready to complete transactions. The AI provides information and calculations rather than executing financial operations.
Real account connectivity
OpenAI partnered with financial API network Plaid to enable account linking for US ChatGPT Pro users.
The integration allows the AI to access live financial account data. The system can analyse balances, investments and transaction patterns.
OpenAI notes the feature is not a replacement for professional financial advice. The functionality could enhance consumer financial literacy and budgeting capabilities.
The implementations by Klarna, NatWest and OpenAI demonstrate different approaches to embedding AI in consumer financial decisions. Each maintains separation between AI advisory functions and actual transaction execution.
