Will xAI's Grok be a Distraction for Tesla Drivers?

Tesla has announced plans to bring Grok AI to Teslas in Europe and the UK after announcing that an initial rollout has begun.
The service doesn't come for free, despite the likely ownership the driver has of their car.
Costing £9.99 (US$13.50) a month for the Premium Connectivity subscription, the software includes live traffic visualisation and satellite-view maps.
The driver and other passengers are also free to converse with Grok on a drive.
While the Leo British voice can be enabled by UK drivers, the AI assistant is also rolling out to eligible EVs in Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Portugal and Spain.
However, the novelty of the product risks distraction for the driver or by other passengers in the car interacting with the system while the driver is focusing on the road.
A smart co-pilot, or a new distraction?
Grok AI offers useful features for a driver, with some of its core functions including the ability to initiate navigation commands, set destinations and adjust routes while on the move.
It can also interpret dashboard alerts and reference the vehicle owner's manual.
In spite of the positives, there are potential risks of having an AI agent readily available for interaction with the driver and others in the car at any given time – especially when children are in the vehicle.
Grok has dedicated children's modes, including Story Time and Trivia Game, while a couple of its regular modes include Storyteller and Conspiracy.
Mike Nelson is a partner at Nelson Law and automotive safety researcher. He owns a Tesla with Grok features in the US, which have been available since the first rollout in July 2025.
He says that chatbot technology introduces a "distraction layer" for drivers.
He adds: "Research shows that even in hands-free mode, you are more distracted when you are talking on the phone and driving. Adding Grok introduces more stimuli."
Content access moderation
While anyone can access standard modes, over-18 users have the freedom to access other modes, which are Unhinged, Sexy, Motivation, Romantic and Argumentative.
However, Grok's section on the Tesla website doesn't include any information on how this is moderated, nor is there any further information publicly available on how the technology limits users under the age of 18 accessing its mature content.
There is a question of whether safety is being considered at all, as Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and Grok, appears to hail Grok as an AI model that is less "woke" than other AI rivals.
Last week, he posted on X that "Grok must win or we will be ruled by an insufferably woke and sanctimonious AI".
Grok's section on Tesla's website also affirms to its users that interactions are private and secure, as all conversations remain anonymous and are not linked to the driver or their vehicle.
This mandate is an important privacy measure, but also creates room for misuse.
Grok is currently facing regulatory challenges from the ICO and Ofcom, as they continue their investigations in to the chatbot following its ability to create deepfakes, which is illegal in the UK.
Tesla and xAI have not said whether they can limit minors' access to Grok in Tesla vehicles.
Grok x Tesla supporters
Despite distraction concerns, Grok’s hands-free, mood-lightening integration in Teslas is earning praise from industry voices, including David Swift, Funding Assessor at the UK Space Agency.
Writing a piece on LinkedIn following the initial roll out of the Grok AI product in Teslas in the UK, he says: "Traffic can be corrosive. Grok's conversational mode offers a curious antidote: affirmations, breathing prompts, even a wry joke about British weather when the rain begins its inevitable descent.
"While no AI replaces human connection, the ability to diffuse frustration without taking hands off the wheel is not trivial."
Alvin Foo, Venture Partner at Zero2Launch, also praises the technology: "The Grok + Tesla integration is actually super elegant.
"It's the cleanest preview right now of how humans will move through the world with AI."
Balancing praise for Grok’s advanced features with caution over distraction and misuse, Tesla's debut could preview everyday AI in cars if strong safety and privacy guardrails are upheld.
