How Wipro is Leading METRO’s AI Transformation on Cloud

The AI-powered technology services and consulting company, Wipro, has announced the successful completion of a large-scale, multi-year data centre migration programme for international food wholesaler METRO.
The successful migration moves the legacy IT operations of the international food wholesaler to a modern, secure and resilient multi-cloud ecosystem on Google Cloud.
This transition establishes a resilient, scalable and future-ready digital foundation which supports the long-term growth ambition of METRO.
The enterprise cloud transformation journey serves as a core pillar of the cloud-first strategy and digital transformation agenda of the wholesale company.
By eliminating legacy infrastructure constraints, the new infrastructure positions the organisation for its next era of AI transformation and rapid, real-time innovation.
Khaled Bagban, CIO at METRO, says: “The successful completion of this programme marks a key milestone in METRO’s transformation journey towards a scalable, cloud-based and AI-ready IT landscape.
“Together with Wipro and our partner ecosystem, we have established a resilient and future-ready digital foundation that enables us to accelerate innovation and drive AI adoption at scale. This achievement reflects the strength of our collaboration and supports our ambition to become an AI-first company.”
The partnership between the two companies represents a long-standing commitment to enterprise modernisation across Europe.
Omkar Nisal, Europe CEO at Wipro, says: “Our long-standing partnership with METRO reflects Wipro’s ability to deliver large-scale enterprise transformation with precision, resiliency and measurable impact.”
As the wholesaler enters its next era of AI-powered transformation, Omkar says the technology will unlock greater business value.
Automating operational areas
Delivered via a phased and risk-controlled programme, the new digital backbone strengthens the cybersecurity of METRO while enhancing digital capabilities, agility and resilience.
A major component of this deployment involves the integration of Wipro Intelligence, which is a unified suite of AI-powered platforms, solutions and offerings.
The programme has enabled intelligent automation across key operational areas, including user lifecycle management:
- Integrating advanced automation capabilities to manage service requests autonomously
- Improving turnaround times, accuracy and overall operational efficiency
- Applying advanced AI-driven engineering tools to accelerate software development cycles
- Enhancing code quality and enabling faster issue resolution across the cloud ecosystem.
These engineering advancements enable METRO to identify recurring patterns and systemic issues, thereby strengthening decision-making.
Tara Brady, President of Europe, Middle East and Africa at Google Cloud, says: “METRO’s successful data centre exit is a benchmark for enterprise modernisation across Europe.
“With a Google Cloud foundation, METRO has not only eliminated legacy infrastructure constraints but has strategically positioned itself to lead in the AI era. It’s a privilege to partner with METRO and Wipro on this journey, delivering the data architecture, scalability, and security required to drive real-time innovation and long-term business value.”
The completion of the data centre migration marks a major achievement in the strategic digital and IT partnership between Wipro and METRO.
The companies had first announced the technology deal in December 2020, a relationship that was subsequently solidified when the two organisations signed an extension in June 2025.
