Why Google Acquired AI-Powered Cybersecurity Leader Wiz

Google has formally completed its acquisition of cloud and AI security company Wiz, signalling a major shift in how organisations will approach cybersecurity in an AI-driven world.
The deal, initially announced in March 2024, represents one of the largest technology acquisitions in 2025 and highlights the growing intersection between artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
The acquisition by Google's parent company, Alphabet, for US$32bn brings together Google Cloud's security infrastructure with Wiz's Cloud and AI Security Platform. This combination will create a unified defence system designed to address the evolving threats that artificial intelligence brings to enterprise security.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, says the acquisition adds to "Google Cloud's robust security portfolio as companies across all industries face a growing number of cybersecurity threats".
He adds: "Wiz enables organisations to secure cloud and AI applications by connecting code, cloud and runtime into a single shared context, allowing customers to identify risks, harden environments and protect applications continuously."
Together, the companies will offer an AI-powered cybersecurity platform that combines Google's Threat Intelligence and Security Operations with Wiz's Cloud and AI Security Platform to detect, prevent and respond to threats across all environments.
AI introduces new security challenges
The urgency behind the acquisition stems from AI's transformative impact on cybersecurity. As AI enables applications to be built, deployed and scaled at unprecedented speeds, traditional security models that rely on manual monitoring are struggling to keep pace.
Assaf Rappaport, Co-Founder and CEO of Wiz, says: "In March 2025, we shared that Wiz would be joining Google. At the time, we spoke about a belief that by bringing together Wiz's innovation and Google's scale, we could meaningfully change what security looks like in the cloud.
"What has changed is the world around us. Now, we must do this at the speed of AI.
"At Wiz, we believe security should accelerate progress. By combining deep understanding of cloud environments with rich context across code, cloud and runtime, we enable teams to build AI-powered applications securely from the start and strengthen them continuously as they evolve."
According to Assaf, security should accelerate progress rather than hinder it. By combining deep understanding of cloud environments with rich context across code, cloud and runtime, the platform aims to enable teams to build AI-powered applications securely from the start.
Code-to-cloud security powered by AI
The practical application centres on delivering what Google and Wiz call a "code-to-cloud" security paradigm. Wiz's technology maps software architecture and runtime behaviour in real time, providing visibility from development to production.
This approach can identify vulnerabilities and misconfigurations before they become breaches, a critical capability as AI accelerates development cycles
Phil Bues, Senior Research Manager of Cloud Security at IDC, says: "Complexity is the primary challenge in the cloud today and Google is addressing the need for a simplified 'code-to-cloud' security strategy that works across any environment. By integrating Wiz's proactive multi-cloud visibility and risk assessment with its own AI-driven operations, Google is positioned to deliver a unified, predictive defence customers need."
The broader implications extend beyond Google's enterprise customers to the entire cybersecurity ecosystem. The deal validates the Cloud-Native Application Protection Platform (CNAPP) market's importance as artificial intelligence reshapes threat landscapes.
Amiram Shachar, Co-founder and CEO of Upwind, says the news is great "for the broader cybersecurity community".
He adds: "This moment reinforces just how large and important this market has become. Wiz has helped demonstrate that this category truly has no ceiling – it's one of the fastest-growing and most important markets."
According to Amiram, the escalating geopolitical climate, which has given rise to an accelerating wave of AI-driven cyber attacks, will intensify demand for cybersecurity solutions and catalyse an acquisition spree by global enterprises.
AI-driven threats accelerate demand
Jason Girzadas, Deloitte US CEO, acknowledges the strategic significance of the acquisition.
"As a strategic alliance of both Wiz and Google Cloud, we are excited about the benefits this combination can provide for global organisations as they scale AI solutions and navigate increasingly complex and evolving cybersecurity threats," he says.
For enterprise customers implementing AI technologies, the message focuses on continuity. Wiz will remain a mult-icloud platform, continuing to protect workloads across all major environments while benefiting from Google's global infrastructure and AI capabilities.
The acquisition represents a strategic response to the accelerating pace of AI development and the corresponding evolution of cybersecurity threats. As organisations worldwide integrate AI into their operations, the need for security solutions that can keep pace with AI-driven innovation becomes increasingly critical.
The combined platform will enable organisations to address security challenges at the speed required by modern AI development, providing the foundation for secure innovation in an increasingly complex threat landscape.
