By breaking down the barriers between accounting software and Gen AI, Xero and Anthropic intend to enable users to act on financial insights

Xero's multi-year partnership with Anthropic is aimed at embedding advanced AI capabilities directly into its small business platform. It marks a significant development for small businesses and their accounting advisors with the provision of real-time financial intelligence.

By breaking down the barriers between accounting software and Gen AI, the two firms intend to enable users to act on financial insights without switching between disparate applications.

Understanding agentic workflows

A central component of this partnership is the enhancement of JAX (Just Ask Xero), the platform's AI superagent. By leveraging Claude's advanced reasoning capabilities, JAX is designed to move beyond simple data retrieval and into agentic workflows.

This means the system can proactively analyse revenue, track cash flow and identify unpaid invoices to suggest specific actions. According to Xero, this approach aims to transform how small business owners interact with their financial data.

Diya Jolly, Chief Product & Technology Officer at Xero, says: "Every day, millions of small business owners ask the same questions: why is cash tight this month? Which invoices are overdue? Can I afford to hire?

"To run their business efficiently, small business owners and their accountants and bookkeepers need to be able to answer these questions and act on them in real time whether using Xero or Claude. This partnership delivers on that."

Diya further explains that the integration is about more than just accessibility: "Small businesses and advisors don't just need data; they need a digital partner that acts on it.

"Integrating Claude moves Xero into agentic workflows, where Xero's AI superagent, JAX (Just Ask Xero), does the heavy lifting, from predicting cash flow gaps to executing complex financial tasks."

She continues: "Crucially, this trusted intelligence isn't locked into one platform; it follows the user securely wherever they choose to work, empowering advisor collaboration. By shifting the admin burden to a team of agents orchestrated by JAX, we're giving our customers time back and providing them with clarity so they can make informed decisions and focus on the future."

Financial intelligence at scale

For Anthropic, the deal represents a major move into the fintech sector, providing a pathway to power end-to-end financial workflows at scale. Users will be able to bring their Xero data into Claude.ai to perform detailed business planning and scenario modelling.

This allows for the combination of real-time internal metrics, such as profit and unpaid invoices, with external market trends. The integration aims to provide small businesses with analytical capabilities that were previously accessible primarily to larger organisations.

Chris Ciauri, Managing Director of International at Anthropic, says: "Xero has spent 20 years building the financial platform that millions of small businesses depend on. Claude brings a reasoning layer to that foundation.

"Now, instead of spending hours trying to make sense of their financials on top of everything else it takes to run a business, customers get clear answers and recommended actions in real time. This provides small businesses and their advisors with the kind of financial intelligence that used to require a dedicated analyst or CFO."

Data security and development

The partnership is built on a foundation of data responsibility. Both companies have confirmed that financial data shared during sessions is used exclusively for that specific interaction.

According to the companies, proprietary business data is not used to train Anthropic's models, ensuring compliance with Xero's responsible data use commitments.

Beyond customer-facing tools, Xero's own engineering teams will adopt Claude and Cowork to accelerate internal product development. This internal adoption demonstrates Xero's confidence in the technology it is bringing to its customers.

The integration of Claude-powered insights within Xero and the availability of Xero experiences within Claude.ai are expected to be rolled out over the coming months.
