Humanity is "entering a rite of passage, both turbulent and inevitable, which will test who we are as a species".

The thoughts of Dario Amodei, CEO at Anthropic, who has written a 20,000-word blog titled The Adolescence of Technology which addresses the "risks of powerful AI".

Dario argues that society is about to gain "almost unimaginable power" through advanced AI systems, but questions whether existing social, political and technological institutions are mature enough to manage it responsibly.

He defines "powerful AI" as models that could outperform humans in disciplines such as biology, mathematics, engineering and writing. These systems, he suggests, will be able to both follow human instructions and direct humans in return, with the potential to operate robots and act more independently in the physical world.

Dario believes this level of capability may arrive within one to two years, although he acknowledges uncertainty around exact timelines.

Indirect risks

A major concern, Dario explains, is the risk of unintended consequences. He highlights the challenge of "unknown unknowns" – indirect effects that may emerge as AI accelerates breakthroughs in medicine, biology and even human enhancement.

Such developments could bring enormous benefits, but he warns that change on this scale, happening so quickly, carries serious risks.

"They could be positive if responsibly done," he writes, "but there is always a risk they go very wrong."

He also points to broader societal disruption. A future where billions of AI systems are vastly smarter than humans, he argues, would fundamentally alter daily life. Potential dangers include manipulation, addiction and a loss of purpose.

For Dario, ensuring AI aligns with human wellbeing is essential, adding: "Will humans be able to find purpose and meaning in such a world? We simply need to break the link between the generation of economic value and self-worth and meaning."

Economic disruption and labour market shifts

Dario also predicts major upheaval in work and wealth distribution. Many roles, particularly entry-level white-collar jobs, may be vulnerable.

"We may disrupt 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs over one to five years," he writes.

Dario goes on to argue that companies will face a choice between using AI primarily for cost savings or for innovation. While both outcomes are likely, he believes there may be opportunities to steer organisations towards innovation to reduce immediate social harm.

Anthropic, he says, is already considering ways to support workers displaced by AI, including systems where people could still be compensated even after traditional employment ends.

A challenge for civilisation

For Dario, AI is not simply a technical breakthrough but a strategic challenge for civilisation. He calls for international cooperation, robust regulation and careful system design.

He points to Anthropic’s development of an AI "constitution" for Claude as one approach to aligning models with human values and reducing misuse.

Despite the risks, Dario remains cautiously optimistic, believing society can navigate the transition if action is taken quickly and responsibly.

"I believe if we act decisively and carefully, the risks can be overcome," he writes, adding that there is "a hugely better world on the other side of it".

Ultimately, there can be little doubt that AI is transforming society. The question is whether humanity is prepared to guide that transformation wisely.
