Located in the Piedmont region, just an hour from the Italian Alps, the Vercelli innovation lab hosts engineers and scientists committed to evolving next-generation AI technologies that transform Amazon’s operations.

Since its inception in 2019, the lab has integrated AI tools and automation into Amazon’s mechatronics and sustainable packaging efforts across Europe.

Acting as a dynamic test bed, the facility trials robots and AI solutions that are fine-tuned before global deployment.

In 2023, Amazon augmented the Vercelli site to include a visitor centre, offering free, guided tours that highlight innovations developed using AI.

The journey starts at the “experience centre” with a digital map explaining Amazon's intricate logistics, exemplified by key products like the Kindle, which aids in operating robotic systems in fulfilment centres.

“It makes sorting so much easier for FC workers and basically removes the step of needing to manually sort packages that head to the same direction,” Richard Zeger, Sr Robotics R&D Manager and Head of Amazon's Vercelli Innovation Lab, tells Amazon.

“I want visitors to see how every innovation is always focused with the customer in mind, always trying to deliver in time, and more efficiently.

“I also want them to understand that new technologies are constantly being developed in the heart of Europe and we are really proud of that.”

AI-powered robotics at work

Central to the innovation showcase is the AI-embedded Flat Sorter Robotic Induct (FSRI), which uses vision sensors to sort items with speed and accuracy, showing Amazon’s strategic application of AI to solve complex logistical challenges.

The impact of automation on workplace safety is demonstrated through infographics outlining how machinery has decreased repetitive tasks, allowing employees to concentrate on more valuable activities.

Another system, the Bags Containerisation Matrix Sorter (BCMS), enhances efficiency by grouping packages headed to the same postal code, significantly reducing manual labour and boosting capacity.

AI enhancements in sustainable packaging

Among the lab’s AI-driven breakthroughs is the Universal Robotic Labeller, adept at labelling products of various shapes, thereby promoting waste reduction and recyclability.

The automated system for designing custom-fit paper bags to meet specific item requirements is a highlight at Amazon’s Bristol FC in the UK. This innovative approach cuts down on surplus packaging material and presents an eco-friendly process.

Visitors can engage directly with this technology during tours, witnessing the precision of AI solutions first hand.

Amazon’s global AI ecosystem

The Vercelli facility is a crucial part of Amazon's global network focused on robotics and sustainably driven innovation.

In locations such as Sumner, Washington and suburban Boston, Amazon operates hubs applying unique AI and automation technologies for greener and more efficient packaging and logistics processes.

Engineer Kara Hurst, Chief Sustainability Officer at Amazon, says: “Inside our Innovation Lab in Sumner, WA we’re developing ways to make each box, bag and envelope smaller, lighter and more sustainable, without compromising product protection,” sharing the approach to packaging innovation.

The test capabilities, which include durability assessments, underpin Amazon’s commitment to sustainability, embedding sensors in environmentally friendly designs and ensuring optimal protection.

The Vercelli visitor centre tour, open to visitors aged six and over, offers an immersive experience divided into sections: The Big Picture, showcasing logistics; The Innovation Mindset, illustrating AI technology development and The Shop Floor, displaying real-world AI tools in action.
