Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to invest up to US$50bn in AI and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure for US government agencies, starting in 2026.

This marks the first time a commercial cloud provider has built such dedicated infrastructure for government use.

The investment will add nearly 1.3GW of capacity across its secure AWS Top Secret, AWS Secret and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. The goal is to provide federal agencies with advanced AI services across all data classification levels.

Expanding AI capabilities

The new data centres will feature powerful computing and networking to handle demanding government workloads.

Federal agencies will gain access to a full suite of AI tools like Amazon SageMaker for building models and Amazon Bedrock for deploying Gen AI.

The infrastructure will support technologies from Amazon Nova and Anthropic Claude to AWS Trainium AI chips and the latest from Nvidia.

This will enable agencies to create custom AI solutions, process large datasets and boost workforce productivity.

Matt Garman, AWS CEO, says the investment will “fundamentally transform how federal agencies leverage supercomputing.” He adds it will give them advanced AI to “accelerate critical missions from cybersecurity to drug discovery.”

AWS capabilities will be available to existing and future US government customers across the three AWS government regions

Government strategy and market leadership

The investment supports the Trump administration’s AI Action Plan from July 2025, which aims to accelerate innovation and build US AI infrastructure.

AWS, which already supports over 11,000 government agencies, is making this move as tech giants invest billions in AI.

In the third quarter of 2025, AWS held 29% of the global cloud market, ahead of Microsoft Azure (20%) and Google Cloud (13%).

A history of powering government cloud

AWS has long provided dedicated cloud infrastructure for the US government, launching its GovCloud (US-West) region in 2011.

It later introduced AWS Top Secret-East in 2014, the first air-gapped cloud for classified workloads and its Secret Region in 2017.

This made AWS the first provider accredited across all US government data classifications.

“This investment removes the technology barriers that have held government back and further positions America to lead in the AI era," the CEO concludes.
