SevenUp Bottling Company’s Chief Information Officer Vasco Gonçalves and Head of IT Ibidapo Ibrahim are implementing innovative digital strategies

Vasco Gonçalves and Ibidapo Ibrahim are the driving forces behind SevenUp Bottling Company's digital transformation in Nigeria.

Vasco, originally from Portugal, brings a wealth of international experience to his role as Chief Information Officer at SevenUp Bottling. With a background in engineering, including specialisations in construction and civil engineering, Vasco's journey into the IT world was driven by passion. His unconventional path into the role has contributed to his innovative approach to problem-solving within the company.

Vasco's career at SevenUp Bottling began in 2012, marking his first professional experience outside of Portugal. Initially, he worked outside the IT department, focusing on implementing software solutions for the sales and operations departments. This cross-functional experience provided him with valuable insights into the company's operations, which would prove crucial in his later role as CIO.

In 2018, Vasco was appointed Chief Information Officer, a position that allowed him to merge his previous team, the business intelligence department, with the IT department. This consolidation marked the beginning of a comprehensive IT transformation journey for SevenUp Bottling.

Ibidapo, on the other hand, joined SevenUp Bottling in May 2019 as a systems developer. His initial role focused on identifying areas within the business that required technological improvements, particularly in infrastructure, applications and services. This position allowed Ibidapo to gain a deep understanding of the company's technological needs and challenges.

Currently serving as the Head of IT Business Solutions, Ibidapo plays a crucial role in implementing and overseeing the technological advancements within the company. His expertise complements Vasco's strategic vision, ensuring that the IT solutions are not only innovative but also aligned with the specific needs of SevenUp Bottling's operations in Nigeria.

Together, Vasco and Ibidapo have tackled significant challenges in modernising SevenUp Bottling's IT infrastructure. When Vasco took over as CIO in 2018, the company's IT services were limited to a decentralised ERP system, local email services and restricted internet access. The technology was severely outdated, with the last major update dating back to 2001.

Under their leadership, the IT department has expanded its service catalogue, democratised internet access, implemented security measures and overhauled the company's hardware and networking capabilities. They have also spearheaded the implementation of SAP, a major ERP system, which has led to significant process re-engineering within the company.

Their efforts have extended beyond internal systems to customer-facing solutions. They have developed mobile applications for both internal users and customers, improving operational efficiency and customer service. Additionally, they have explored new digital sales channels, including innovative use of WhatsApp for order processing and payments.

Vasco and Ibidapo's work has been particularly crucial given SevenUp Bottling's significant position in the Nigerian market. As the exclusive Pepsi bottler in Nigeria, one of the largest markets for Pepsi globally, the company faces unique challenges and opportunities. Their ability to navigate these complexities while driving technological innovation has been key to maintaining the company's competitive edge.
