Nuno Guerreiro, CTO at Kobalt Music, reveals how key partnerships and emerging technology such as AI are building a more transparent music industry

Nuno Guerreiro serves as Chief Technology Officer at Kobalt Music, steering the company through its next phase of technological evolution and overseeing all Engineering, Product and IT operations.

Nuno serves as the critical link between the executive team and the technology organisation, aligning strategic planning with agile product delivery. He joined Kobalt nearly seven years ago and has held the CTO position for the past three-and-a-half years.

Originally from Portugal, Nuno has a background in software engineering and has spent the last 15 years working across the UK and Ireland. His technical foundation includes both a BSc and an MSc in Computer and Systems Engineering.

Nuno began his career in Portugal, building systems for the retail and healthcare sectors before moving to London. He spent a few years in investment banking, developing sophisticated general ledger data warehousing systems and a new trading platform.

Seeking a faster-paced environment where he could return to building software, Nuno transitioned to the tech industry, landing at Yahoo to work on its advertising platform, focusing on campaign reporting.

His career trajectory found a deeper purpose at Schibsted, a news media and online classifieds conglomerate. Nuno describes the period as one that awakened his "desire to work for an organisation that made a positive impact on society”. At Schibsted, he led the ground-up build of an online advertising engine, finding significant motivation in helping news organisations find sustainable revenue streams, thereby contributing to journalistic freedom.

Following a brief period at Babylon Health, Nuno fully committed to a management and leadership track. He was introduced to Kobalt by a former manager from Schibsted and was immediately drawn to the company's "noble mission" to bring transparency to the opaque music industry. He embraced the "huge challenge" of modernising its complex platforms, a role that aligned with his personal passion for music.

Nuno identifies his current CTO role as his most significant professional challenge, especially following the 2022 acquisition by Francisco Partners. He is currently leading the company through a period of "substantial investment in technology modernisation and to support considerable business growth". The transformation has meant he has had to re-evaluate how software is planned and delivered, implement new resourcing strategies and adapt its culture to meet changing business priorities.

An analytical and empathetic problem-solver, Nuno cites his leadership style as open and focused on listening. He is personally inspired by the integrity and perseverance of his maternal grandfather and professionally by the "passion, dedication and humbleness" of his colleagues. His management approach is guided by the "70% rule," a principle of effective delegation that empowers his team by viewing any execution gap as an opportunity for development.
