Andrea Ruotolo
Global Head of Customer Sustainability at Rockwell Automation
Andrea Ruotolo has built her career on a simple yet revolutionary premise: AI and environmental responsibility can be allied forces in manufacturing.
As Global Head of Customer Sustainability at Rockwell Automation, she’s proving this theory correct with a philosophy that cuts through the traditional either-or mentality that has long plagued industrial decision-making.
“AI has revolutionised our sustainability efforts by enabling smarter, real-time decision-making,” she says – and it’s this shift from reactive firefighting to proactive problem-solving that defines her approach to transforming how manufacturers think about their environmental impact.
How Andrea is making AI work for everyone
What sets Ruotolo’s work apart is the technology as well as its accessibility.
For instance, Rockwell’s FactoryTalk® Analytics™ LogixAI® doesn’t require a PhD in data science to operate, instead, ML capabilities are embedded directly into the controllers that manufacturing teams already use, allowing operators to spot problems before they become costly disasters.
The real-world story proves the results. When Eastern Municipal Water District integrated AI into their wastewater treatment operations, they slashed aeration energy use by 31%.
That wasn’t just a number on a sustainability report – it meant genuine cost savings, better water quality and reduced chemical dependency.
The system practically runs itself, requiring minimal staff intervention whilst continuously optimising based on changing conditions.
Meanwhile, Rockwell Automation’s collaboration with Meati Foods demonstrates how these principles scale across entirely different industries.
The sustainable meat alternative producer, working with mushroom root technology, needed precise environmental controls to optimise growth.
These examples show that Rockwell’s automation systems monitor conditions as well as adjust them in real-time, minimising resource consumption whilst maximising output.
Tangible sustainable action
Rockwell uses its own AI-powered solutions internally, tracking energy usage and carbon emissions across company facilities.
“By applying the same solutions we offer to our customers, we demonstrate integrity and set an example,” Andrea says.
Beyond corporate walls, Andrea also serves as President for Canada on the Global Council for Responsible AI.
Her work on the Responsible AI Institute’s white paper exploring the intersection of AI and environmental governance further reflects her belief that technology advancement must align with ethical standards.
“At the intersection of digital transformation and environmental stewardship, my work is about shaping the future of industry,” she says.
Perhaps most importantly, Andrea insists on measurement.
Through platforms like FactoryTalk® Energy Manager™, manufacturers gain visibility into energy consumption patterns at incredibly granular levels – from individual machines up to entire production facilities.
This isn’t about feel-good sustainability goals, but identifying exactly where inefficiencies lurk and targeting improvements with surgical precision.
Vision for tomorrow’s factory floor
Andrea’s vision extends to challenges and opportunities in the future.
Currently, she’s researching applications for waste reduction, water conservation and circular economy principles within manufacturing operations.
This shows that her goal is about more than better factories, but also reimagining how industrial operations can serve both productivity and planetary health.
“We’re advancing responsible AI frameworks to ensure that as these tools scale, they do so ethically and transparently,” she explains.
“Our mission is to expand human possibility by making our customers more productive, agile, and environmentally responsible.”
