MoD Powers Up Data and AI Analytics with £50m Investment

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is taking a major step forward in digital transformation by investing £50 million (US$62.6m) into enhancing its data analytics infrastructure. This move is part of a broader initiative across government sectors to upgrade obsolete systems and embrace cutting-edge technologies like machine learning.
Defence organisations globally face the challenge of managing vast quantities of data, sourced from battlefield sensors, logistics networks, and personnel databases. To tackle this, the MoD has devised an approach that consolidates these data sources into a unified platform. This facilitates extensive cross-department analysis and reduces redundancies in systems.
Supporting this strategy, the MoD has signed a significant contract with the digital technology enterprise Kainos. This collaboration aims to develop and maintain the MoD's innovative cloud-based defence analytics system, thereby broadening Kainos's footprint in the government tech arena.
Under a three-year agreement, Kainos will enhance the Defence Data Analytics Platform (DDAP), which is operational on AWS infrastructure. This platform is designed as a comprehensive data analytics solution supporting the full spectrum of British military and defence operations.
Expanding capabilities and uniting departments
The DDAP, initiated by the MoD’s tech division Defence Digital, provides a secured environment where defence personnel can employ standardised tools for data analysis. The primary goal here is to streamline analytics operations across the military branches, promoting efficient data sharing among various defence departments.
With Kainos at the helm, the new contractual phase will focus on integrating diverse data streams from the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force into a cohesive analytics framework.
An MoD spokesperson highlights the strategic vision: “The MoD already holds excellent analytical minds and capabilities across defence. The evolution of DDAP will encourage minds to further unite under one true enterprise system, to help meet the ambitions of the Data Strategy for Defence for standardised, assured and efficient data analytics, as well as accelerate the delivery of new technology capabilities including AI innovation.”
Enhancing user adoption with advanced technology
This initiative is a component of Defence Digital’s implementation of the Data Strategy for Defence, which advocates for democratized data access across military organisations. DDAP’s architecture fosters standardized data analysis methods, thereby enhancing interoperability among different defence departments.
DDAP is a pioneering initiative which we will help to strengthen by introducing new approaches to data management
Central to the platform’s development is the integration of virtualisation technology. This enables simultaneous data access and analysis by multiple users without the need to duplicate data, ensuring analytic consistency across the department and reducing storage demands.
Kainos’s engineers will engage with Defence Digital to craft specialized applications for distinct military purposes. These applications, hosted on the DDAP infrastructure, will offer targeted analytic tools to various military sectors.
Building on an established defence partnership
This new agreement builds upon Kainos’s earlier efforts with Defence Digital, where the firm aided in setting up data teams to develop specialized applications on the DDAP platform. These tools cater to distinct needs across different military branches.
- Contract value: £50 million
- Contract duration: 3 years
- Global customers using Kainos products: 500+
With this expansion, Kainos staff will work closely with defence personnel to pinpoint specific analytics needs, shaping the development of new capabilities aimed at boosting platform adoption throughout the ministry.
The expansion marks a considerable growth in Kainos’s public sector portfolio, with the company operating across three main business divisions: Digital Services, Workday Services, and Workday Product. In October 2023, Kainos launched an innovative Employee Document Management product for Workday systems, now supporting over 500 global customers.
Brendan Mooney, CEO at Kainos, expressed his enthusiasm: “It is a great privilege to expand our partnership with the MoD to drive forward an evolution of how data analytics is used across UK defence. DDAP is a pioneering initiative which we will help to strengthen by introducing new approaches to data management, tooling and governance, and importantly by working closely with personnel across the MoD to understand their specific data needs.”
