In recognition of their contributions, AI Magazine highlights 10 exceptional leaders in the UK and Europe who are making significant strides in the field of AI.

10. Tabitha Goldstaub

Role: Board Member at Luminate

Tabitha Goldstaub

Tabitha Goldstaub is a prominent figure in the UK's AI landscape. As the co-founder and chair of CogX, she has played a pivotal role in creating one of the world's largest festivals of AI and emerging technology. The event, which began in 2017, has grown to attract over 100,000 attendees annually, showcasing the importance of something Tabitha created and her ability to bring together diverse voices in the tech industry.

In addition to her work with CogX, Tabitha has made significant contributions to AI policy and education. She was appointed by the UK government as a Chair of the AI Council in 2018, where she advised on the responsible development and deployment of AI. Tabitha is also the author of 'How to Talk to Robots: A Girls' Guide to a Future Dominated by AI', published in 2020, which aims to demystify AI for young women and encourage their participation in the field.

9. Nuria Oliver

Nuria Oliver

Nuria Oliver is a distinguished computer scientist with over 24 years of experience in AI research. Her work has significantly advanced the fields of human behaviour modelling and human-computer interaction. Nuria's contributions have been recognised with numerous accolades, including being named an ACM Distinguished Scientist in 2015 and an ACM Fellow in 2017, making her the only Spanish researcher to hold both titles simultaneously. Nuria's impact extends beyond academia.

She has co-invented over 40 patents and served as the first female Scientific Director at Telefonica R&D for eight years. In 2020, she took on a crucial role as Commissioner for the President of the Valencian Region on AI Strategy and Data Science to combat COVID-19. Her team's efforts in this capacity led to them winning the US$500,000 XPRIZE Pandemic Response Challenge, demonstrating the practical applications of her research in addressing global crises.

8. Nigel Toon

Role: Co-founder and CEO of Graphcore

Her expertise has been recognised by international organisations, leading to her consulting with organisations like NATO and others on AI. Mara is also a frequent speaker at global technology conferences, where she advocates for the importance of human-centred AI design, and has  lectured at many universities, including the London School of Economics, about how to humanise AI.

6. Zoë Webster

Zoë Webster is a AI consultant who aims to help businesses build credible AI strategies. In this capacity, she draws from her experience as the Director of Data and AI Solutions at BT, where she collaborated with various digital teams across the company to leverage data and AI for enhancing customer value. Her primary focus was on accelerating these initiatives to maximise the wide-ranging benefits of AI throughout the organisation.

Prior to her role at BT, Zoë spent over 13 years at InnovateUK, culminating in her position as Director of AI and Data Economy. This extensive experience has provided her with a comprehensive understanding of AI's impact on both corporate environments and society at large.

5. Andreas Dengel

Role: Scientific Director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)

4. Anne Laure Thibaud
