The New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) has named Shreya Amin its inaugural Chief AI Officer (CAIO).
She will be tasked with driving AI strategy across state agencies with a particular focus on positioning New York as a leader in ethical, government-led AI innovation.
With over 17 years of experience spanning healthcare, education and civic technology, Shreya brings knowledge of enterprise AI transformation, cross-sector collaboration and responsible deployment – all critical assets for global organisations navigating AI’s shifting regulations.
To do this, she will focus on integrating AI to enhance public services, streamline operations and ensure transparency.
New York State CIO Dru Rai says Shreya will: “will help drive the responsible use of this nascent technology and make New York State a leader in AI development for the benefit of all New Yorkers”.
She will additionally prioritise ethical guardrails, equity and human oversight, aligning with global trends toward governance-centric AI adoption and New York’s commitment to fostering research and innovation in AI for public good – a model relevant to international audiences balancing innovation with societal impact.
Furthermore, she will refine ITS’s AI guidance documents, optimise risk-benefit tradeoffs and modernise legacy systems, including cataloging existing AI tools into a public inventory, ensuring accountability.
Shreya’s cross-sector experience – from leading AI frameworks at healthtech firm Wellist to founding an AI consultancy – positions her well to address these broad challenges, including bias mitigation, workforce upskilling and scalable deployment.
