AI legal challenges: Reddit files a lawsuit against Anthropic and Disney innovates to accommodate how AI is changing the entertainment sector

The AI industry faces mounting legal challenges as companies compete against each other.

A big part of this competition is over companies trying to acquire vast datasets needed to train increasingly sophisticated models to develop large language models (LLMs).

This tension centres on a fundamental conflict between AI companies’ need for training data and platform owners’ desire to control and monetise their content.

As a result, consequences have risen, including web scraping, the automated extraction of data from websites, which has now become a contentious practice.

Now, major technology firms have begun establishing formal licensing agreements for data access, creating a two-tier system where some companies pay for content while others attempt to collect it without permission.

This divide has sparked numerous legal disputes across the industry, exemplified by two recent developments: Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Anthropic over allegations of unauthorised data collection for training LLMs – and Disney is having to adapt to the increase of AI and technology across the entertainment centre.

The broader impact of Anthropic bypassing Reddit’ s technical protections

Reddit’s case highlights growing tensions in the AI industry over data acquisition practices and user privacy protections.

Steve Huffman, Reddit CEO

The lawsuit, filed in California state court, claims Anthropic made more than 100,000 unauthorised requests to Reddit’ s servers to collect user posts, comments and other content without permission.

Reddit alleges this occurred despite Anthropic’s public statements that it had ceased such practices.

According to the complaint, Anthropic circumvented Reddit’s robots.txt file, a standard web protocol that instructs automated systems which parts of a website they should not access.

This technical measure serves as a digital barrier for web crawlers and scraping bots.

This alleged breach from Anthropic has partly triggered Reddit to take action, as it has established licensing agreements with major technology firms including OpenAI (owned by Anthropic) and Alphabet – including provisions for content usage, privacy safeguards and data deletion procedures.

The social media company claims Anthropic ignored these restrictions and violated the platform’s terms of service by collecting user content without authorisation.

The complaint includes allegations that Anthropic gathered deleted posts, raising concerns about user privacy and data retention practices.

Consequences of data breaching

Reddit further alleges that Anthropic declined to pursue a formal licensing agreement, instead opting to scrape content directly from the platform.

This approach allowed Anthropic to avoid licensing fees whilst bypassing user protection measures, according to the lawsuit.

Dario Amodei, Anthropic CEO

The case references a 2021 research paper co-authored by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which identified Reddit as a valuable source of training data for language models (LMs). Dario co-founded Anthropic after serving as Vice President of research at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

Reddit presents evidence that Claude reproduced Reddit posts with accuracy, including content that users had subsequently deleted from the platform. The company argues this demonstrates Anthropic’s failure to implement safeguards for user privacy and content removal requests.

“For its part, despite what its marketing material says, Anthropic does not care about Reddit’s rules or users,” the lawsuit states. “It believes it is entitled to take whatever content it wants and use that content however it desires, with impunity.”

Reddit contends that Anthropic’s actions violated principles of fair competition by accessing Reddit’s data without compensation, while competitors paid licensing fees for similar access.

The company seeks financial damages and a court injunction preventing Anthropic from using Reddit content in future model training or development.

Anthropic’s multiple copyright challenges

This legal action is the latest challenge to Anthropic’s data collection practices.

Key facts:
  • Reddit is suing Anthropic for allegedly scraping over 100,000 user posts and comments without permission to train its AI models
  • Reddit claims Anthropic bypassed technical protections, violated terms of service and refused to enter a licensing agreement
  • The lawsuit highlights broader industry tensions over data rights, user privacy and ethical AI development

In August 2024, a group of authors filed a class-action lawsuit claiming Anthropic used copyrighted books without permission to train its AI models.

Universal Music Group and other music publishers filed a separate lawsuit in October 2023, alleging that Claude reproduced copyrighted song lyrics without authorisation.

The music companies claimed this violated their intellectual property rights and requested court orders blocking further use of their content.

Reddit’s case differs from previous copyright-focused lawsuits by emphasising breach of contract and unfair competition rather than intellectual property violations.

The platform argues that user-generated content on its site remains subject to terms of service that Anthropic knowingly violated.

Why Disney has created the Office of Technology Enablement for AI integration

Meanwhile, Walt Disney is taking a different approach to AI adoption.

The company has formed the Office of Technology Enablement to coordinate emerging technology applications across its divisions, signalling a push into AI and mixed reality.

The innovation comes as the entertainment industry struggles with challenges and opportunities presented by AI and extended reality technologies – as these advancements are changing how content is created and how consumers interact with entertainment experiences.

Therefore, The Office of Technology Enablement will focus on AI and mixed reality (MR), which blends elements of augmented and virtual reality (VR/AR) to create immersive experiences that merge physical and digital worlds.

Alan Bergman, Disney’s Entertainment Co-Chairman

“The pace and scope of the advances in AI and XR are profound and will continue to impact consumer experiences” says Alan Bergman, Disney’s Entertainment Co-Chairman.

Disney’s exploration of these technologies spans its various business divisions, such as the theme park sector – and the company is assembling a team to investigate how augmented reality and virtual reality can enhance visitor experiences.

Disney’s plan to harness AI for the better

The company’s commitment to innovation is evidenced by the return of Kyle Laughlin to Disney as Senior Vice President of Research and Development for Walt Disney Imagineering – as Kyle’s background in AR, VR and AI positions him to drive innovation in theme park attractions.

At the lead of this initiative is Jamie Voris, Chief Technology Officer of Disney’s film studio. Jamie led the development of Disney’s application for the Apple Vision Pro, a mixed reality device.

The Office of Technology Enablement will operate under the direct supervision of Alan Bergman.

Initially launching with a core leadership team, the group is projected to expand to approximately 100 employees.

While it will not centralise all of Disney’s technology projects, the unit will ensure that technological initiatives across the company align with strategic objectives.

“The pace and scope of the advances in AI and XR are profound and will continue to impact consumer experiences, creative endeavours and our businesses for years to come –  making it critical that Disney explore the exciting opportunities and navigate the potential risks,” says Alan.
