Partner Research Manager at Microsoft Mary Czerwinski talks about AI's role in supporting mental wellbeing

Mental health has become a pressing global concern, with a quarter of people expected to experience a mental health issue within the next 12 months and one in seven experiencing a common mental health problem, such as anxiety and depression, at work. As the prevalence of mental health challenges continues to rise, there is a growing need for innovative solutions to support wellbeing both in and out of the workplace.

In recent years, technology has evolved at a rapid pace, with artificial intelligence (AI) now at the forefront of innovation. This technological advancement presents an opportunity to leverage AI and other digital tools to address mental health challenges in new and effective ways. From wearable devices to mobile apps and AI-powered chatbots, there is a wide array of technologies that can be harnessed to enhance mental wellbeing and provide support to those in need.

To find out more, we spoke with Mary Czerwinski, Partner Research Manager at Microsoft, about the role of technology in supporting mental wellbeing and the potential of AI to revolutionise mental health care.

Mary emphasises the importance of considering how technology can support mental wellbeing, given the scale of the challenge. She explains, "With a quarter of people expected to experience a mental health issue within the next 12 months and one in seven experiencing a common mental health problem, like anxiety and depression at work, it's clear there is a major issue around wellbeing. But what can be done to overcome this global challenge?"

The Microsoft researcher points out that AI, in particular, has the potential to make a significant impact in this area. "With the right guardrails, AI can be steered and designed to help with mental health challenges," Mary notes. This suggests that while AI's capabilities continue to grow, it is crucial to ensure that its development is guided by ethical considerations and focused on beneficial applications for society.

When discussing specific technological tools used to reduce stress, Mary highlights the evolution of everyday accessories into powerful health monitoring devices. "Wearable devices have changed the way we monitor our health by giving us real-time updates on things like our heart rate and sleeping patterns," she explains. "These devices can be used to constantly monitor us throughout the day (and night) and can alert users to signs of stress, allowing technical interventions that can teach users how to limit the impact of life stressors."

This continuous monitoring and real-time feedback represent a significant advancement in proactive mental health management. By providing users with immediate insights into their physiological responses to stress, these devices enable timely interventions and promote self-awareness.

Mary also points out the role of mobile phones and apps in mental health support. "Mental health apps are an accessible way to help manage stress. Having a range of apps that focus on different issues can provide users with a personalised experience, allowing them to take control of their wellbeing," she states. The versatility and accessibility of mobile apps make them a valuable tool in the mental health toolkit, offering users a range of options to address their specific needs.

The integration of AI into these tools further enhances their potential. Mary explains, "AI can be used to personalise mental health interventions even further and can provide assistance 'just in time' when the help is needed." This personalisation and timely intervention capability of AI-powered tools represent a significant step forward in mental health support, offering tailored assistance at critical moments.

Addressing the issue of workplace burnout, Mary highlights how technology can help mitigate the challenges of modern work environments. "Today, workers are constantly receiving communication from multiple channels, which has been heightened since Covid," she notes. "To prevent this, organisations can introduce tools to their employees that identify signs of stress so that they are more aware of their wellbeing at work."

These tools can learn individual patterns and make personalised suggestions, such as recommending short breaks. However, Mary emphasises the importance of data privacy in these applications, stating, "These interventions are for the employee's personal use and the data of course needs to be kept confidential and private."

AI aiding mental health outside work

Beyond the workplace, Mary points out that these technological solutions can be equally beneficial in home environments. "When at home, workers can personalise their mental health solutions even further, meaning they might be able to cater to their own needs even better," she explains.

This flexibility allows individuals to access support in ways that are most comfortable and effective for them, whether through online therapy or AI-powered chatbots.

The potential of technology to address the growing mental health crisis is becoming increasingly clear. "It's clear that mental health cases are growing but we now have the right tools to improve and monitor wellbeing," she states. "From wearable technology and mobile apps to AI-driven platforms, these tools provide support that couldn't be accessed decades ago, helping individuals manage stress both at the office and at home."

As we continue to navigate the complexities of mental health in the modern world, the integration of technology, particularly AI, offers promising avenues for support and intervention.

By embracing these advancements, we can work towards creating healthier, more supportive environments that promote mental wellbeing for all.
