Elon Musk unveils Grok3
Elon Musk's xAI has launched Grok-3, its latest AI model developed with 10 times more computing power than its predecessor

In our technology-driven world, companies are intensifying efforts to lead in the AI landscape.

Already the likes of Google, Meta and Anthropic have invested billions in developing and releasing competing AI models, with each claiming to have advanced the application and use of the technology in areas including safety and protection, and capabilities.

Now xAI, founded and led by Elon Musk entered the development race, setting its sights on surpassing competitors like OpenAI's GPT-4, with the launch of Grok-3. Musk boldly claims that the new large language model (LLM) is "the smartest AI on earth". But is he right?

Unpacking Grok-3's capabilities

xAI has poured substantial resources into developing Grok-3, including the building of a bespoke data centre in Memphis that houses 200,000 GPUs. These units are pivotal for the extensive computations and calculations needed during the model's training stage.

This extensive focus on development and rollout has packed Grok-3 with a suite of cutting-edge features:

Enhanced computational power
Grok-3 has a tenfold increase in computing power compared to its predecessor, Grok-2.

Advanced functionality
On various standard benchmarks, Grok-3 outstrips competitors such as OpenAI's GPT-4o, Google's Gemini-2 Pro and DeepSeek-V3, particularly in fields like mathematics (AIME), science (GPQA) and coding. It also supports a voice mode and can process chain-of-thought reasoning.

Multimodal ability
This model isn't just about texts; it can analyse images and field questions, integrating smoothly with features on Musk's social platform, X.

Grok 3 is “a maximally truth-seeking AI, even if that truth is sometimes at odds with what is politically correct.”

Deep search technology
Grok-3 introduces the "Deep Search", described by xAI as having the ability to redefine search engine capabilities.

Self-correcting mechanism
Unlike others that require periodic updates, Musk claims Grok-3 adapts by learning from its mistakes to ensure logical integrity.

Extensive training data
With a dataset that includes legal texts and court documents, Grok-3 can theoretically offer insightful legal advice.

Accessibility
It's accessible to premium X subscribers and through a unique subscription for web and app users.

Advances demonstrated in recent benchmarks

On Grok-3's performance, xAI reports significant achievements in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) and the Graduate Physics Question Answering (GPQA) assessments. Here, Grok-3 has proven its capabilities handling complex problems across physics, biology and chemistry.

The inclusion of legal documentation in the AI's training phase diverges from traditional language models, equipping Grok-3 to deliver what Musk describes as "extremely compelling legal verdicts", though these claims await practical verification.

Some of Grok 3’s features:
  • Voice mode: allowing verbal responses to queries
  • Chain of thought reasoning: a mechanism that simulates human thought processes for complex tasks
  • Massive computational infrastructure: Grok 3 was trained on a custom-built supercomputer with 200,000 GPUs

xAI's moves in AI competition

Grok-3 was unleashed on Tuesday 17, representing a major escalation in resources committed compared to Grok-2. Musk emphasised, "Grok-3 is an order of magnitude more capable than Grok-2".

The unveiling of Grok-3 arrives amidst escalating tensions between Musk and OpenAI, especially after Musk proposed a US$100bn buyout of OpenAI, which was firmly rejected. Although he envisions reorienting OpenAI to its original community-driven ethos, criticisms suggest intertwined motives with Musk's ambitions for xAI.

Musk candidly acknowledged during Grok’s debut, “It’s a maximally truth-seeking AI, even if that truth is sometimes at odds with what is politically correct".

Exclusive access through new subscription models

Currently, Grok-3 remains an exclusive offering for Premium+ subscribers on X, with a newly announced SuperGrok tier that broadens access across mobile and web platforms via Grok.com.

The model supports various operational modes including the "Think" setting for regular operations; the "Big Brain" setting channels more resources for intricate queries.

Musk revealed: "Our general approach is that we will open-source the last version when the next version is fully out," indicating an eventual public open-source release of Grok-2 once Grok 3 stabilises. At the World Governments Summit in Dubai, Musk remarked on the new AI's capabilities, suggesting it was fearsomely adept, "scary smart."
