IPhone 16: What Is Included in Its “Apple Intelligence”
Apple has furthered its foray into AI with the unveiling of its latest iPhone 16 boasting AI hardware upgrades.
Dubbed Apple Intelligence, the AI integration aims to enhance various aspects of the user experience, augmenting things from basic tasks to complex operations.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that this marks 'a new chapter in Apple innovation'.
This introduction of AI capabilities comes amid murmurings that the previously king of the tech has been slow to join the race for the technology.
After initial announcements in June, the contours of its AI applications are beginning to take shape. So what exactly is Apple Intelligence? And what does it do?
AI applications
At its core, Apple Intelligence leverages advanced Gen AI models. Much like PC versions of the AI systems, this will enable users to create text, manipulate images, but also help users interact with their devices' features in new ways.
For instance, the writing tools go beyond simple autocorrect, offering context-aware suggestions to improve tone, style, and clarity across various applications. Users can transform hastily written notes into polished documents or adjust the formality of messages to suit different recipients.
The Photos app receives a significant upgrade with the introduction of the "Clean Up" tool. Much like the Google Pixel, this feature allows users to remove unwanted objects or people from images.
Moreover, the AI-driven search functionality enables users to locate specific images or video moments using natural language queries.
This is thanks to Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, undergoing a substantial overhaul as part of the Apple Intelligence initiative. The new Siri boasts improved natural language processing, enabling more fluid and context-aware interactions. It can now maintain conversational context across multiple queries and offers practical advice on device operation.
Apple Intelligence also introduces sophisticated summarisation capabilities, distilling lengthy content into concise, actionable information, extending to everything from notifications, emails, and even audio recordings.
On device AI
At the heart of these new abilities is the A18 Pro chip, a purpose-built processor capable of performing complex AI tasks directly on the device. This on-device processing not only enhances performance but also addresses privacy concerns by minimising data transmission to external servers.
For more demanding operations, the iPhone 16 integrates with Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, ensuring a smooth and responsive user experience even for the most complex AI-driven tasks.
Apple’s future with AI
As Apple continues to refine and expand its AI offerings, several exciting features are on the horizon, with things like Image Wand creater, Genmoji emoji creator and Visual Intelligence object and scene recognition.
Equally, OpenAI's ChatGPT is due to be integrated into Apple’s products. Yet like the phone, which won’t begin till October as part of the iOS 18.1 update, that will come later this year.
As Apple embarks on this ambitious journey into the realm of AI, it's clear that the company aims to use its smartphone as the vehicle for which it can foray into the tech.
