How AI is Powering Lenovo’s Sustainability Journey

Lenovo’s FY2025 ESG Report showcases how the company is integrating AI to fortify sustainability, equity, and responsible innovation in its business model.
From utilising AI-driven design processes to fostering global inclusion, Lenovo is embedding these elements to support circular economy principles throughout its operations and supply chain.
This year, the company demonstrated substantial progress in its environmental and social footprint, earning accolades for its sustainable and ethical practices.
Harnessing AI for circular product stewardship
The core of Lenovo's sustainability initiatives aligns with its commitment to a circular economy, significantly supported by AI technologies.
By employing AI algorithms, Lenovo enhances the efficiency in utilising closed-loop post-consumer recycled plastics across its products, aiming for complete integration by 2026.
AI further aids in identifying opportunities to replace virgin materials with ocean-bound plastics and recycled metals, such as aluminum and copper, aiding sustainable material cycles.
Lenovo's investment in AI-enhanced product repairability and reuse initiatives extends product life, facilitated through AI-driven self-repair programs and strategic collaborations such as that with iFixit.
The Product End-of-Life Management program benefits from AI-supported processes for managing and recovering materials from returned equipment, emphasising reuse instead of landfill disposal.
Global recognition for AI-driven ESG excellence
Lenovo’s verifiable ESG performance, bolstered by AI tools, has achieved global recognition.
In FY2025, Lenovo received awards such as the Platinum rating from EcoVadis and was ranked #8 in Gartner’s 2025 Global Supply Chain Top 25 with a notable ESG score, thanks in part to AI-optimised processes.
The company also earned the Gold Award for Best Corporate Governance, showing its dedication to sustainability and ethical business methods.
The Science Based Targets initiative net-zero goal forms the backbone of Lenovo’s climate leadership, supported by AI-driven strategies to manage emissions.
“In 2023, after having our net-zero emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, Lenovo shared its Climate Transition Plan,” says Laura Quatela, Senior Vice President, Chief Legal & Corporate Responsibility Officer.
“This plan continues to guide our work to measure and manage emissions across our global enterprise.”
AI assists Lenovo in tracking its progress toward reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50%, Scope 3 product-use emissions by 35% and upstream supply chain emissions by over 66% by 2030 – with ambitions of a 90% reduction by 2050.
AI-powered social impact and global inclusion
Lenovo extends its social responsibility globally, using AI to enhance social programs like its community volunteer initiative.
In FY2024, AI tools helped amplify the reach of Lenovo's community service programs by 44%, engaging more employees than ever before.
Now with AI-enhanced processes, Lenovo aspires to positively impact over 15 million lives through its philanthropic strategies by 2025.
Initiatives in workplace inclusion also benefit from AI analytics, contributing to Lenovo being named a Best Workplace for People with Disabilities in several countries.
Calvin J Crosslin, Vice President, Chief Inclusion Officer, says: “As a global company, navigating dynamic geopolitics is part of how we do business across 180 markets.
“Inclusion has always been at the core of what we do, and to exclude anyone on the basis of race, gender, background or any other factor would be counter to our mission.”
Governance and responsible AI innovation
Lenovo’s governance strategy also incorporates AI governance policies aligning with international standards to ensure ethical use, data privacy and algorithmic fairness.
Yuanqing Yang, Chairman and CEO, says: “Building on the creation of the Responsible AI Committee in 2022, in 2024 we implemented a company-wide policy governing the use of AI across our business.”
This policy supports Lenovo’s participation in external commitments such as the European Commission’s AI Pact and other international AI management frameworks.
Internally, Lenovo additionally created the dual role of Chief Security and AI Officer to oversee AI integration across its technology and operations, enhancing collaboration and sustainability through AI-driven supplier and partner programs.
Looking ahead, Lenovo focuses on AI-driven strategies to meet its sustainability goals, emphasising digital transparency and cross-sector partnerships for a more inclusive, circular and sustainable future economy.
