Appian: Using AI to Transform Supply Chain Performance

AI and cloud firm Appian has unveiled Appian 25.1, the latest iteration of its software designed to inject AI deeper into business operations.
Built to enhance supply chain efficiency, automation and responsiveness, the platform strengthens enterprisesā ability to manage large-scale operations and respond to challenges using data insights and predictive tools.
According to Michael Beckley, Chief Technology Officer and Founder of Appian, the focus of Appian 25.1 is on making AI practically valuable by embedding it directly into process automation.
"Making AI valuable requires injecting it into business processes," he says.
The platform integrates large language modelsāAI systems capable of understanding and generating human languageāwith Appianās autoscale process engine and data fabric.
Data fabric is an architecture that provides a unified way to access and manage data across systems, and Michael explains that the challenge for most companies is that traditional data fabrics are read-only and limited in scale.
"For Appian 25.1, our data fabric natively reads and writes 10 million rows per record, enabling AI to be reliably injected into mission-critical processes in all industries," he says.
Using AI to streamline supply chain management
AI plays a central role in improving supply chain operations by enabling more accurate demand forecasting, automating logistics workflows and refining inventory control.
Appian 25.1 supports this shift with a set of AI-led enhancements that improve responsiveness and minimise disruption.

Appian 25.1 can process up to 75 times more documents an hour, handling hundreds of millions of pages each year.
This helps eliminate delays caused by manual processing, particularly in areas such as compliance checks, shipping documents and invoice handling.
The platform also introduces enhanced data management, supported by the ability to synchronise up to 10 million rows per record type. This improved capacity is essential for maintaining accurate and up-to-date datasets across various supply chain functions.
Better data management means organisations can make faster, more informed decisions while maintaining greater visibility into operations.
Another feature is centralised monitoring, where dashboards consolidate key performance indicators (KPIs). These tools allow teams to identify and respond to issues quickly by providing real-time insights into operational performance, reducing the time spent investigating problems and allowing faster corrective action.
Rob Turverey, Director of Learning and Delivery at Groundswell, reflects on the impact of the upgrade: "The results we experienced in the beta programme exceeded our expectations.
āWe were hoping it would be 50% faster and were excited to see a 5x improvement. We believe these performance improvements will have a big impact on our customers."
