SAP announced a series of new sustainability-adjacent products at Sapphire 2025
At SAP Sapphire 2025, SAP launched AI-powered ESG tools, carbon reporting solutions and data platform for compliance and environmental management

SAP, the world's leading B2B software provider, has announced a new suite of AI-powered sustainability services set for release throughout 2025.

The German tech giant has also announced the launch of a new data integration platform, designed to support organisations in navigating ESG compliance demands and carbon disclosure requirements.

Company executives presented these developments at SAP Sapphire 2025, the organisation's flagship summit, which took place across several sites in May.

The newly developed product line has been designed to be easily incorporated into the existing technological infrastructure of SAP's clients, allowing them to progress toward their environmental objectives with both simplicity and speed.

With its new suite of AI products, SAP hopes that it can make environmental data as central to modern businesses as financial or operational data.

How SAP uses AI to supercharge compliance

At Sapphire 2025, SAP announced that its innovative Business AI features will enter beta phase beginning August 2025, encompassing the company's portfolio of environmental, health and safety (EHS) and regulatory compliance applications.

According to SAP, automation represents a critical element in the future of corporate environmental responsibility.

The AI-powered permit oversight feature integrated into SAP S/4HANA for EHS environment management will handle permit administration automatically by gathering crucial information from regulatory documents and suggesting necessary compliance actions, serving as a digital consultant for environmental managers.

If sustainability is not part of the current AI conversation in your organisation, it risks getting left behind while strategy and budgets are open.

Safety documentation processes will also receive significant improvements.

"If sustainability is not part of the current AI conversation in your organisation, it risks getting left behind while strategy and budgets are open," says Sophia Mendelsohn, Chief Sustainability Officer at SAP.

Through the expanded product offering, Joule, SAP's  AI assistant, will facilitate incident reporting via natural language interaction, dramatically improving the efficiency of health and safety workflows.

The AI-powered safety protocol generator will recommend appropriate protective measures drawing from risk analysis and hazard identification studies.

In the realm of regulatory compliance, automated information capture and categorisation from certifications, permits and safety documentation is intended to eliminate manual data entry errors.

These innovations will also be included in SAP's upgraded SCM premium service, highlighting the company's focus on embedded AI business solutions.

How businesses use SAP's AI to decarbonise

Current SAP customers are already implementing the company's Business AI across various environmental applications.

The Sustainability Control Tower platform helps users expedite ESG documentation creation through pre-built templates, automated text generation and dynamic charts.

SAP's Sustainability Footprint Management solution utilises AI to simplify emissions factor correlation by linking products with environmental impact database entries through algorithmic confidence measurements.

The SAP Green Token system exemplifies this approach through its automated verification and data processing capabilities for International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) vendor statements, providing users with transparency regarding their supply chain partners' environmental practices.

In summary, AI technology offers substantial opportunities for sustainability enhancement across diverse business functions.

"If sustainability is not part of the current AI conversation in your organisation, it risks getting left behind while strategy and budgets are open," says Sophia Mendelsohn, Chief Sustainability Officer at SAP.

"Sustainability is emerging as one of the most impactful enterprise applications for AI."

SAP's future AI offerings

In the second quarter of 2025 and beyond, SAP will embed its Sustainability Control Tower as an Intelligent Application within the SAP Business Data Cloud ecosystem.

This integration is designed to merge environmental data with operational information through a centralised platform supporting consistent reporting and comprehensive organisational decision-making.

Preview access will be granted to select customers ahead of the general market launch.

The company additionally intends to release structured environmental data products during the year's remaining months, covering atmospheric, aquatic and waste management information sourced from SAP EHS Management and S/4HANA compliance modules.

Companies subscribed to SAP Business Data Cloud will additionally benefit from expanded dataset access through the SAP Sustainability Footprint Management platform.

AI's role in corporate sustainability going forward

SAP's latest announcements specifically target what Sophia and Gunther Rothermel, Co-GM and Chief Product Officer at SAP Sustainability, characterise as "the gap between strategy and execution".

"The changes we launched this week go well beyond technical updates," Gunther said last week.

"They represent a strategic shift: scaling sustainability within the core of business operations, powered by AI and applications."

With this new technology portfolio, SAP seeks to elevate sustainability information to what Sophia and Gunther call "decision-grade data worthy of sitting alongside financial and operational metrics".

The ultimate success of these developments will likely be determined by market acceptance and the practical utility of AI-enhanced compliance technologies, though current indicators suggest positive outcomes for both SAP and its customer base.
