AMD is hoping to capitalise on the appetite for bespoke AI solutions by acquiring AI compute designer ZT Systems

AMD has announced a dramatic acquisition of computing company ZT Systems in a US$4.9bn a move that will significantly update its AI infrastructure capabilities.

ZT Systems brings over 15 years of experience in designing and deploying AI compute and storage infrastructure tailored for hyperscale computing environments.

By integrating ZT Systems into its Data Center Solutions Business Group, AMD aims to create a synergy that combines its advanced silicon technology with ZT Systems' proven systems design capabilities.

Enhancing AI infrastructure

The acquisition of ZT Systems allows AMD to address a key challenge in the AI infrastructure market: the need for bespoke AI solutions

Already, the AI infrastructure market is projected to grow significantly, with AMD estimates suggesting it could be worth $400 billion by 2027.

ZT Systems’ expertise is therefore critical for AMD as it aims to enhance its data centre offerings. By integrating ZT Systems into its Data Center Solutions Business Group, AMD plans to leverage this expertise to accelerate the deployment of its AI infrastructure at scale.

“ZT adds world-class systems design and rack-scale solutions expertise that will significantly strengthen our data centre AI systems and customer enablement capabilities,” says Dr Lisa Su, AMD's Chair and CEO.

The company specialises in designing and optimising systems for AI training and inference, which involves running AI models efficiently and effectively.

Having this designer on side is expected to significantly improve AMD's ability to offer customised solutions to hyperscale cloud customers, reducing the time required to deliver full AI clusters from several quarters to a much shorter time frame.

AI clusters are complex, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. With ZT Systems' design and customer enablement teams, AMD can offer tailored solutions  that meet the specific requirements of large-scale systems customers.

Building on through acquisitions

AMD's acquisition of ZT Systems is part of a broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities through strategic investments.

This follows AMD's US$665m acquisition of Finnish AI startup Silo AI, which was aimed at expanding its AI abilities.

Such acquisitions highlight AMD's focus on building a robust AI portfolio that combines high-performance hardware with advanced software and system design expertise to offer a complete solution.

As the market continues to expand, AMD's ability to offer tailored, high-performance AI infrastructure solutions will be crucial in shaping its future success and placing it as a contender among other companies offering AI.
