Job To: Scale AI’s Board Director and Leader of Meta’s Superintelligence lab

“The race for AI global leadership is well underway and our nation’s ability to efficiently adopt and implement AI will define the future of warfare.”

Scale AI Founder Alexandr Wang is joining Meta to work on its superintelligence efforts.

The superintelligence group is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent assembly of experts to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), recruiting from researchers and engineers.

Mark believes Meta can outstrip other technology companies in AGI – which is the concept that machines can perform as well as humans at many tasks.

Once Meta reaches that milestone, it could integrate the capability into its suite of products, including social media and communications platforms, its Meta chatbot and AI-powered Ray-Ban glasses.

Mark is building the team alongside a planned multi-billion dollar investment in Scale AI, the company that offers data services to help companies train their AI models – and where Alexandr is CEO.

Scale AI supplies human-labelled training data that enables autonomous vehicles to recognise pedestrians and helps large language models understand complex scenarios.

Now, Alexandr will become Scale AI’s Board Director and Meta’s superintelligence group’s leader.

His credentials in AI stem from Scale AI’s position as a critical infrastructure provider for machine learning (ML) systems.

Meta says it is acquiring “the one guy who knows what everyone else in the AI industry is doing”, according to Bloomberg analysis.

Alexandr’s extensive network includes relationships with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, his former MIT roommate and connections throughout Silicon Valley’s AI ecosystem.

Alongside Alexandr, Jack Rae, formerly Principal Research Scientist at Google DeepMind and Johan Schalkwyk, ML Leader at Sesame AI, will also be joining the superintelligence team.
